DAVID ALEXANDER BRELAND
October 5, 1957 - August 20, 2019
David is lovingly survived by his common law wife Karen and her children, Steven (Tammy), Ryan (Jessica), David (Brandy), and six granddaughters who all called him Papa Dave. Brothers, Stanley (Gail), her children, Whitney and Ryan, and Arthur (Audrey), their children, Chelsea (Matt) and Vanessa (Brett). He was predeceased by his sister Patricia and parents, Arthur and Olga. He will be missed by his extended family and good friends.
Born in Winnipeg, David lived his entire life in Lido Plage (Cartier), Manitoba. He attended St. Francis Xavier Elementary School and graduated from St. Paul's Collegiate in Elie, in 1976. Shortly after graduating David started working at the Headingley Correctional Institute where he retired after 40 years of exemplary service. David was well respected at work and during his illness received numerous calls from coworkers and management offering their support and prayers.
David enjoyed keeping busy and drove a school bus for many years for the Prairie Rose School Division, first as a spare driver while still employed at Headingley, then once retired he took on a full-time route. He really enjoyed the students.
David was an avid sports person, playing and excelling in many sports. He enjoyed hockey, baseball, curling, downhill and cross country skiing were some of his favourites. He belonged to a group that held season tickets for the Jets games since they returned to Winnipeg. He had been a Bomber lifetime season ticket holder and had attended many Grey Cup games over the years. David's favourite hobbies included snowmobiling in the winter, taking care of his yard and watching his nieces play fastball in the summer. He was a coach from the sidelines and travelled to many of their tournaments.
A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at CancerCare Manitoba and the Portage la Prairie Hospital for the excellent and compassionate care they provided.
As per David's wishes, a private family interment has taken place.
A tribute to remember David, where you can come and go, will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019 between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Anavets Assiniboia, 3584 Portage Avenue. All are welcome to come and have a beverage on David. He will be missed by all who knew him.
If friends desire, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, MS Society or a charity of your choice.

Dave was a great friend who had many great qualities. He loved his family and relatives and enjoyed engaging in all kinds of sporting activities with family and friends. I met Dave while working at the Headingley Correctional Centre back in the early 80'S and it was easy as Dave was a very approachable type of person. I can say Dave was a very dependable, Reliable, responsible and the most important respectful towards others. I remember even on occasions inmates would tell me how much respect they had for Mr.Breland. I am proud that you came into my life all those years as we worked together socialized together and most importantly got to know and understand each other. I know Dave was strong in his relationship with Jesus and Iam so proud for him. I miss you Dave and think about you all the time. Bye for now my friend and I pray to Jesus I will see you again some day. - Posted by: Tony chartrand (Friend-Co-Worker) on: Dec 31, 2023

Dave told me there was an incredible place to go skating right by the area where he lived. Damn i loved hockey and rivers and ponds so i talked my best friend (since Jr High 1977) Bob to drive up the Tran Canada Highway in my dads old 1979 Volare to go out to the White Horse and meet Dave on the old Assiboine River..It was an incredible time. Could Dave skate.. We skated and played for about an hour and a half.I worked with David at the Jail and what a really nice guy he was - and a great sense of humor..Thankyou Dave for that memory on the river many years ago. David was not only a relative but a co worker for 40 years. I am so proud to say we are related, you were so admired and respected at work and as I walked the floors this week at work there was much sadness and shock from our fellow peers. We have lost a friend but God has received a beautiful soul. My heart and prayers are extended to the family ❤️🙏🏼 Maureen - Posted by: Maureen Breland (Cousin and co-worker) on: Aug 24, 2019
