ADAM (JOE) PONDO
March 19, 1935 - August 25, 2019
He was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Weronika; his sister Jean; his brother Stanley; his in-laws, Joseph and Kathleen; his brothers-in-law, Stan, Frank and Bryan; and his sisters-in-law, Martha, Connie and Elsie.
Adam was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 19, 1935. He met Joan in 1951 and they were married on June 16, 1956. Just prior to his illness, in 2016, Adam and Joan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary surrounded by their family and friends. It was a very special day for them both. Joe, as he was known by his work family, had a very long and rewarding 39 and one half year career with the Manitoba Telephone System having never taken a sick day. Joe retired at the age of 55 in 1991 as a PSCC Manager.
As an active volunteer throughout his life, Adam, along with three other Garden City residents were instrumental in starting the Garden City Community Centre. Adam went on to be President of this centre for 10 years starting Sunday night bingo, renting the hall out for social events and setting up girls and boys sports programs. Adam also had a long volunteer career with the MTS Pioneers.
Throughout their lives, Adam and Joan loved travelling to many different locations around the world. Their trips included many cruises, but Hawaii was one of their favourite holidays. They loved Hawaii so much they travelled there 39 times. Adam enjoyed fishing with his brother-in-law Bryan and was a regular golfer at Kildonan Park Golf Course on Saturday mornings. He was lucky to score a hole-in-one at Kildonan 52 years ago. He was part of the "Lugan" gang, a golfing group of buddies who battled annually for the Lugan Cup. Adam hoisted the cup once during their playing days together.
In 1994, Adam's only grandchild, Ryan was born. Papa and Ryan had a special bond. Papa taught Ryan many things including how to play cards, especially 31 and they had many firsts together. Papa even taught Ryan to love green Kool-Aid.
Adam will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Joan, his grandson Ryan, Diana, Sandy and family, Susan and family, his sister-in-law Margaret, his daughter Karen, several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
Adam's life will be honoured on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Pallbearers are Ryan McNamee, Tony Warzel, Randy Ranick, Al Lucas, Frank Kruszynski and Ed Nicholson. Honourary pallbearers will be the Telephone Pioneers.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Maples Personal Care Home (2W) for their kindness and compassionate care of Adam and the many friends that took time to visit during the last two and a half years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer Society Manitoba Dementia and Brain Health or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Dear Joan, Please accept my deepest sympathy in the passing of Adam a few days ago. I know the time ahead will be difficult but I hope you will take some comfort from knowing you were there for him when he needed you. Despite the passage of time, I do remember very well when you and Adam met in your teens and there was no one else for either of you. You and he have had 63 lovely years together and have made many wonderful memories that only you and he shared. May these sustain you in the days ahead. Sincerely, Ilene Watt - Posted by: Ilene Watt (Long Time Friend ) on: Aug 28, 2019

Dear Joan & Pondo family, I was so very sorry to see that your dear Joe passed away and extending my deepest sympathy. I knew Joe as a passionate volunteer with the MTS Pioneers. With his band of merry MTS retirees he was the driving force in the delivery of annual campaign material for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years! On more than one occasion, he stopped by to make sure everything was organized (by postal code) and was ready to go when the volunteers arrived! Thank you for sharing this wonderful tribute! It's evident that Joe was generous with his time and talents. He will be missed.
