LAWRENCE HNATOWICH, CD
1920 - 2019

Lawrence "Larry" Hnatowich rejoined his beloved parents and siblings on August 31, 2019. Dad was born November 19, 1920 in Winnipeg to Hrynko (Harry) Hnatowich and Julia Konarska, the second youngest of ten children.
Dad spent his youth in Winnipeg and at the farm in Grande Point. Dad joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 serving in
England for the duration of the war, and made the military his career, retiring in
December 1969. Dad then continued serving his country for an additional fourteen years with various branches of the Federal
government.
Dad met the love of his life, Betty (Beth) Jenner and they were married on June 29, 1946 in Winnipeg, and shared 73 years
together. He is survived by his wife Betty and his daughter Diane, husband Norm Milne of Kamloops, their sons, Scott of Kingston, and Chris (Liana) of Kamloops, son Garry,
partner Fran (Walley), their sons James and Ian, all of Saskatoon, son James and wife Pam (Fey) of Selkirk and their sons, Michael and Trevor (Desta) of Winnipeg. He is also
survived by great-grandchildren, Lexi (Zach), Tanner, Rhys, Kobe, Carys and Carver. He is also survived by multi-generations of nieces and nephews.
Larry was the consummate story teller
enthralling all with stories of his life, never needing exaggeration, for in his case the truth was stranger than fiction. Dad was an avid outdoors man loving fishing, hunting and camping. An expert marksman, he instructed Junior Rifle for many years, coaching his daughter to a provincial rifle championship. To his sister's shame dad made the best holobchi within the family. Each fall, together with his brother Frank, they searched
exhaustively for wild mushrooms, once found they would rise during the wee hours of the morning and drive the last mile to their
treasure trove without headlights in order to not divulge their find! Dad was a kind, gentle soul who loved and cared deeply, a champion of the underdog, who treated everyone with respect. All who met him used a common
terminology in describing his character, namely a "gentleman." We were extremely fortunate to have had the span of years dad graced us with his wisdom, humour and love, he lived well.
In keeping with his wishes a private family service will be held.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Sorry to hear about Larry’s passing. We had the honour of being neighbours for 10 years. Larry and Betty were always so friendly. They let our 2 boys always use their yard to play football, baseball and golf. We were sad to have them move. God bless Jamie, Wendy, Ryan and Trent. - Posted by: Jamie, Wendy (Old neighbour’s ) on: Dec 11, 2019

  • My Mom and Dad, Don and Dora Cassels, were good friends with your parents. They enjoyed visiting with them in Winnipeg to reminisce about their times in the Air Force and then retirement. Their last posting together was in Rivers. May fond memories comfort you during this time. Donna - Posted by: Donna Cassels (Family friend) on: Sep 25, 2019
