STELLA AHLGREN
and
WALTER AHLGREN

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Stefani "Stella" (nee Delawski) on August 20, 2019 and Walter on August 26, 2019.
Walter and Stella are survived by their son Alan (Elaine), daughter Astrid/Dorothy Ahlgren and grandson Ross Franklin.
Walter and Stella were married in 1949 in Longlac, Northwestern Ontario. They moved to Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) in 1957 and ultimately to Winnipeg in 1967, where they remained until their passing.
Stella began her secretarial career in the Canadian Army during 1944 to 1945 and after her discharge moved to Longlac. After moving to Port Arthur, Stella worked at the YM/YWCA and then continued her career in Winnipeg at Vincent Massey Collegiate, Acadia Junior High, the Fort Garry School Board and Canada Fisheries until her retirement.
Walter worked on the tugboats hauling logs on Long Lake until he accepted a position at Powell Equipment, the local Caterpillar dealer in Port Arthur. The career move precipitated the transfer from Longlac, and then to Winnipeg. Walter worked for Powell until his retirement.
Walter and Stella enjoyed their travels with friends and family, including numerous ocean cruises. When at home, Stella enjoyed sewing, engaged in many bridge games with her friends, and could often be seen tending her flower and vegetable gardens. Walter enjoyed the time in his workshop where he was adept at lathework, making children's toys and a masterful loom.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Walter and Stella's many friends for their support over the past several years. Thank you to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre, Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, Cornish 2 at the Misericordia Health Centre and Victoria General Hospital for the care and compassion extended to Walter and Stella, as well as their son.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Oh, Allan - I only received the mailed card as forwarded from a previous home address very recently and so this comes too late but still I must post something in memory of your dear parents. Your mom, whose gift to my older daughter upon her birth, a handsewn cloth picture "book", remains a keepsake for her. Our parents were friends for all of my youth in Winnipeg and I know this stemmed from Stella working with my dad when he was at the "Y" in Port Arthur. Mom very much enjoyed your mom's company and I know your dad and mine shared many a fine glass of Crown Royal over laughs and tall tales on the many visits we made (and it was mostly us coming to your house as I recall it, sometimes with one or other of our cocker spaniel or other dogs in tow, your parents being so gracious as hosts). I also remember their generosity in putting me and my then very young family up when I came to visit my old school, SJR, for a reunion. I was likely a mischievous truant in the early days but your parents were always patient, kind and welcoming. I will always remember them and am so very sorry for your and Dorothy's loss. • I had the pleasure of working with Walter at Powell Equipment. He was in Inventory Control and I remember well at the beginning of my position there misplacing a portion of his Parts order to Caterpillar. I was nervous to bring it to his attention and when I did he gave me a serious look above his glass frames and thanked me for my honesty. His kindness, work ethic and friendship lasted until he retired. I met his lovely wife when he was helping my husband with an oak table he was attempting to build. Walter was always helpful, meticulous and patient. His love and admiration for his wife and family were always evident. He talked of them always. My deepest condolences. • I am very saddened to hear about the passing of your Mom and Dad. Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and Dorothy. Your parents were such wonderful, kind and considerate people, beyond measure. I have very fond memories of your Mom's great cooking, knitting and gardening and your Dad's gentleness and craftsmanship in carpentry. I consider myself very privileged to have known them.
