LINDA RAE OLAFSON
A loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Linda was always there to help in whatever way required. A wonderful cook and avid baker, the smell of Sunday roast dinner will always remind us of Mom. Her family was always her first priority, no matter where they called home.
Born Linda Rae Boyes to parents, Nettie and Lin in Wynyard, SK, Linda grew up in the small prairie town until high school when she moved with her parents and brother Rod to Madison, Wisconsin for a year while her father was studying for his Masters degree. After graduation, Linda went to nursing school at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in Saskatoon, becoming a registered nurse. She then moved to Peace River, AB where she became close friends with the couple who lived next door, her future brother and sister-in-law, Dorothy and Douglas Olafson. Next stop for Linda was Winnipeg where she had a position at the Women's Pavilion at Health Sciences Centre. The move to Winnipeg was a decision of fate as Linda would meet the love of her life (with a bit of help from Dorothy and future mother-in-law Lilja) Donald in 1972, they would marry one year later September 22, 1973.
Linda and Don would begin their life together in a small home they built on Redonda Street in Transcona, they would then move into a larger home on Wynford Drive when they started a family. Linda and Donald would adopt their first child, a girl, who they named Kristine Lynne, their second child came a surprising year later, another girl, Erica Dawn. And thus their family was complete.
From Winnipeg the family moved to The Pas where Linda and Donald met lifelong friends and Linda was actively involved in Lioness. Once the girls were in school Linda went back to work as a nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital in the nursery. Four and a half years later, they moved back to Linda's home province of Saskatchewan. After less than two years in Saskatoon, the family moved back to Winnipeg and in 1998 moved to Kamloops, BC. Missing the prairies and their family, Linda and Donald moved back to Manitoba and built their retirement home in Gimli where the family had spent summers at the Olafson family cottage.
In retirement Linda and Don enjoyed travelling and exploring new places. From Alaska to the Panama Canal to Florida and Texas, they made the most of their time together.
Linda was predeceased by her parents, Lin and Nettie Boyes, brother Rod, an infant brother, and her in-laws, Arni and Lilja Olafson. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 46 years, Donald, daughters, Kristine (Kieran) Sheffield and Erica (Carey) Timchishen, grandchildren, Liam Sheffield and Tayson Timchishen, brothers-in-law, Brian (Kathe) Olafson and Douglas (Dorothy) Olafson, as well as her nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Area 5 of the Tyndall building for their loving care of not only Linda, but of our family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
As per Linda's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. A private family service will take place at a later date.
