EUPHROSINE SCHMIDT
The last six years of her life, at the Parkway Retirement Community, were arguably the happiest of her life. Here she loved to socialize with her new friends and enjoyed many new activities - especially the weekly Happy Hour. This was in sharp contrast to her early years.
She was born in Poland and was only 15 years old when the Second World War broke out. During all of the chaos the family became separated. They were eventually reunited in Germany, but in the process they had lost their father. Soon after the war, in 1949, Frances met and married her husband Henry. Times were very hard, so it was an easy decision to immigrate to Canada when the opportunity came along. By the time they got to Canada in 1951, their only son Henry had been born. The early years here were also difficult. In 1952 they made it to Winnipeg where she worked in a factory sewing rugs for many years, until Henry's construction business became established. Frances had a good sense of humour, was open minded, loved cooking for family dinners, and had a green thumb when it came to gardening. She rarely complained, and when she did you knew it was serious.
She was predeceased by her husband Henry, her daughter-in-law Barbara, and is survived by her son Henry (Patricia), grandchildren, Lisa and Kevin (Christina), great-grandchildren, Matthew and Marisa, her extended family and many friends, especially Flo Grassler.
The family would like to thank the staff on 5 North at the Victoria Hospital for their extraordinary care and compassion, and to the Parkway for creating a wonderful place to live.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, interment will be held prior to the service at 11:00 a.m.
