FRED PETE DEBRECEN
September 5, 1932 - October 4, 2019
He was born to Paul Debrecen Sr. and Elizabeth (nee Gyuricsko) at 8:15 p.m. on September 5, 1932.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings Paul Jr., Alex, Bill, Ida, Emma, and Olga.
He is survived by daughter Leslie Debrecen (Lance), and granddaughter Mikhaela Gussie; his siblings, Julia, Mary, Jim, John, Jerry and Gloria, and numerous nieces and nephews. His adoring pets: Dude, Sweetie and Singer2, will miss his love and care.
Dad's life was filled with experiences and people from many sources, work, politics, and pastimes. He worked as a Paymaster in the Winnipeg taxi industry prior to a lengthy 30 plus year career with Manitoba Telephone System. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #23, always active and serving in various capacities. He was a member and served terms as president of an antique association in Manitoba, and he was a co-founder of the (1981) Isaac Brock Residents Association. Dad was passionate about politics and loved to engage others in lively political discussions. He ran as a mayoral candidate in Winnipeg's 1989 election; as well, he put his name on the ballot for Manitoba MLA in 1988 and again in 1990.
Dad loved collecting beautiful things and beautiful friends, including those of furry and feathered varieties. His friendships were made through his many activities and connections, and those relationships meant a lot to him. Dad's love for animals was spread over many years and he provided a home to many that would never have had one otherwise - cats, dogs and birds.
Dad will be missed dearly, and
he will be remembered always.
Private burial has taken place at Brookside Cemetery.
If one wishes, a donation can be made in Dad's memory to one of the organizations he always supported: Winnipeg Humane Society, Craig Street Cats Animal Shelter, or The Salvation Army.

Leslie, I wondered for years why I never heard back from your Dad after sending him Christmas cards. He always called for a chat. Now I know why. A friend of mine checked in the obituaries...I never thought to. Somehow it seemed like Fred would never die. He was an intelligent man, full of good values and tenaciously used his democratic freedom of speech...as you know- ha! He showed us his "fortress" over on Salter one day. I've never seen so much nostalgia crammed into one space in my life. He sure loved his old cat and his birds. Gosh, I have sooo many good memories of your Dad. I'm sorry Leslie, it's hard losing your Dad. Lost mine in 2010. His name was Mark Edmondson from Oakville, MB. He also was a good political friend... yes, lots of memories. Are you still on Strathcona? I hope you're doing well. God bless you. Irene Armishaw (Stonewall) - Posted by: Irene Armishaw (Friend, political partner) on: Feb 22, 2025
