MRS. LUCY MARGARET GOURILUK

August 23, 1931 - October 5, 2019

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Margaret Gouriluk on October 5, 2019 at the age of 88.
Margaret was an incredible person who always had an abundance of love and open arms for everyone she met. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Victor, and her daughter, Linda. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Gary (Helene), Gail Muldrew (Larry), Robert (Honor), Brian (Patricia) and Bruce (Myong); grandchildren, Julia (Patrick), Sheila, Lisa (Shane), Dawn (Clint), Nicole (Mike), Leanne, Kira, Christine (Sean), Glyne, Scott, Neil (Kari), Jessica (Adam), Andrew (Olivia), Christopher and Joshua; great-grandchildren, Lara, Liam, Benjamin, Daniel, David, Kayden, Arabella, Dory, Dawson, Hunter, Victor, Clare, Gordie and Lila; brothers and sisters-in-law, Art, Ray, Edna, Violet, Ella and Evelyn; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
Mom was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 23, 1931 to Sarah and Samuel Clokey. Her early years were on Valour Road until the family moved to Harrowby Avenue in St. Vital where she and her sister Kay grew up. Mom attended school at Glenwood Elementary and Glenlawn Collegiate. She spoke often of her teen years as a member of the local C.G.I.T. chapter. Mom always valued her Aunt Jessie (Armstrong) who was like a second mother to Margaret and a second grandmother to her children.
After high school Mom enrolled in the Nursing Program at the Winnipeg General Hospital and graduated in 1952 as a Registered Nurse. During these years she met the love of her life, Victor, whom she married in 1953. They were married for 57 wonderful years until Victor's passing in 2010. They spent their years together raising their six children in their home on Roberta Avenue with summers of entertaining and card playing at Dorothy Lake, winters in Barbados, and travels to six continents making friends all over the world. In 1976, Victor and Margaret partnered with Heinz and Joanna Kattenfeld to create Victor's Restaurant and later, Pantages Restaurant. Mom worked as a hostess allowing her to meet many more friends.
Mom was a lifetime member of the E.K. Lionelles and spent many years bowling at Rossmere Lanes. Mom loved to keep in touch with her friends and family and cherished attending family and nursing reunions as well as hosting family and friends to stay at her home, at the cottage or in Barbados. She loved hosting a seemingly endless parade of events in her home including bridal and baby showers, New Year's Eve parties, birthday celebrations, wedding receptions and family holiday gatherings such as Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving.
She loved to play games and card games, enjoying hours of bridge, canasta, whist and Scrabble with her friends and family. More often than not we lost to her skill, but we also learned from her. Of all these games, bridge was her favourite. She belonged to numerous weekly clubs and if asked to spare in other games she was always ready to play. In testament to her love of bridge, Mom had a fall when playing bridge which resulted in a broken hip, but she finished the match before being transported by ambulance to the hospital!
In July 2018 Mom moved to Concordia Village. As so many of her friends were already at Concordia Village, Mom was excited to become a resident of this community. It allowed her to remain very active and busy. She was enjoying her new home and life there with her many resident friends.
A celebration of Margaret's life will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Highway (338-0331). Viewing will take place prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and for one half hour after the service.
The family wishes to thank the residents and caregivers of Concordia Village who kept Mom's life active and vital right up until her sudden passing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Parkinson Canada - Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
