WILLIAM D. (BILL) HARWOOD
1947 - 2019

William D. (Bill) Harwood died peacefully on October 16, 2019, surrounded by family and prayer.
He is survived by his wife Ann; and son Todd (Nicole Eleniak Harwood); daughter Colleen (Wayne Leflour); three precious granddaughters, Adele, Kaitlyn and Lily; siblings, Wally (Lenore), Dan (Mary), Heather (David) and Tim (Pat); in-laws, Barbara (Charlie), Janet (Paul) and Rob (Theresa); as well as many treasured nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Edmund (Ted) and Winifred Fowler Harwood.
Bill was born on October 10, 1947, in Port Hope, Ontario and later spent time in Alliston and Scarborough. After school, Bill moved to Thompson, Manitoba, where he worked for Inco, retiring as the Superintendent of Human Resources.
While in Thompson, Bill made many friends through work, ball teams, St. James Anglican Church and Scouts Canada where he became an Akela and a trainer. He spent many weekends at the Liz Lake Scout Camp and the Great Northern camps. He was an avid Geocacher with over 2,000 finds. Bill and Ann's neighbours on Centennial East became lifelong friends.
Bill and Ann retired to Winnipeg in 2003. Bill became an active member of St. Peter's Anglican Church and was involved with the maintenance crew, the Creation Care group, various vestry positions and with diocesan committees. He and Ann joined the University of Manitoba Grotto gym and became part of the early morning exercisers community.
In 2015, Bill was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and subsequently underwent many treatments. He was determined to live so that his granddaughters would remember him. He was an amazing "Poppa" to his girls.
The family would like to thank Bill's General Practitioner, Dr. A. Khelil, the medical teams at CancerCare Manitoba and particularly Dr. Eren Beshara and the nurses at Buhler and Riverview Health Centre for their compassion and untold kindness. The family is indebted to all the health care aides who cared for Bill and treated him with complete dignity under difficult circumstances. Much appreciation also goes to the friends met at the Myeloma Canada support group meetings.
The funeral service will take place at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 755 Elm St., on Monday, October 21, 2019, at 2:00 p.m.
Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of donations to Myeloma Canada www.myeloma.ca or Primate's World Relief and Development Fund www.pwrdf.org

  • My condolences on Bill's passing. Bill was a wonderful man - always kind and friendly. He did so much for St. Peter's. He was very supportive when we were changing the accounting system - always patient even when there were times of great frustration. Together Bill and Ann set an example of a loving couple. I am so sorry I am unable to attend the funeral as I missed seeing the obituary and only heard about Bill's passing just before the funeral. Bill will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. - Posted by: Donna Friesen (Friend) on: Oct 21, 2019
