ERNEST (ROSS) MACKENZIE
July 20, 1927 - October 24, 2019

In the early hours of Thursday, October 24, 2019, Ross left this mortal realm for eternal rest.
The son of Ernest and Sarah, predeceased by brother Ken and Don, sister Sheila, and granddaughter Crystal.
Ross leaves to mourn his passing a large and loving family, wife of 66 years Audrey; daughters Donna (Blaine) Hunter and Pat (Dave) Gural, son Jim (Laurel); grandchildren Patrick (Savanna) and Evan Hunter, Jeff (Paty), Jamie and Jackie (Blain) Gural, Jenna (Lucas) and Rob Mackenzie; great grandsons Gabriel, Anthony and Owen.
Ross was born in Winnipeg, MB, growing up in the Wolseley area. He attended Gordon Bell High School where he was a member of the rugby team. Enlisting in the Canadian Army at a young age, Ross completed his training in May of 1945 but never saw duty as the war effort was ended before his deployment. The next chapter of his life led him to northern British Columbia, where he worked for Hudson's Bay Company in Telegraph Creek; stories of this time he would happily share with a smile and a gleam in his eye – tales of horses and dog sleds he rode, treacherous mountain trails he braved, local wildlife and local ruffians he bested. Returning to Winnipeg, he married the love of his life, Audrey, whom he had met through their membership at Greenwood United Church, Young Peoples. Ross worked for Manitoba Telephone Services for nearly 40 productive years where he was respected for his hard work, dedication and fairness.
His greatest joy was his family; he built a cottage at Victoria Beach for their enjoyment, and was always happiest surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their friends. It was common to see elaborate obstacle courses, snow hills, or trampolines built for them to enjoy. Always a child a heart, Ross would join in the fun, whether it was board games, video games, golfing, bike rides and swimming at the lake, or a seemingly endless library of stories and jokes to tell.
Ross would never accept a job not complete, and never considered something "unfixable". He exemplified hard work, kindness, and willingness to help. Always there if you needed help, and tirelessly giving his time and effort for others. He held great pride in the rare and impressive achievement of over 100 donations to Canadian Blood Services. We are so grateful for the dedication, love and compassion of the staff at Oakview Extendicare One East Ward, and the support of his roommate, Ray. In lieu of flowers, contributions could be made to their Bladder Scanner Fundraiser, "Don't Stop Relievin!"

Tally Ho, Ross.

A celebration of "Grandpa Chainsaw's " life will be held at McClure United Church, 533 Greenwood Place, on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 10:30 a.m.

  • Ross was my first manager when I started at MTS in 1973. He made a lasting impression on me with his fairness and how he managed us as a group. If you worked hard for Ross, you were always rewarded! - Posted by: Ed Valcourt (co worker) on: Nov 27, 2019
