SHELAGH EILEEN PRESTON

The family is sad to announce the peaceful passing of our mom and nana, at age 93, on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at the Grace Hospital.
Shelagh was predeceased by her loving husband Don, her son Neil, five sisters, four brothers and countless friends.
Survived by sons, Doug (Angie, Mark, Michele), Bob (Christy, Erin, Ian), daughter Eileen, daughter in-law Cindy (Kailie, Nikki), and great-grandson Tyson.
A lifelong Winnipegger, Mom grew up on Sherburn Street, daughter of William and Willamina McKnight. She attended school at Green Way and Gordon Bell High School. Mom shared the house with five sisters and four brothers.
Mom would often tell us how her mother would be up before anyone and always last to bed, ensuring everyone was well fed and the house cleaned. Mom learned this trait and practiced it all of her life. The breakfast on Sherburn Street was usually porridge and no one could leave the house until everyone had eaten, Mom chuckled every time she told the story of the "porridge eating McKnight's"
Mom worked for McKlaren Advertising for 10 years until she married Dad. Dad and Mom met through mutual friends, the group would party together and go to dances. Mom told us she had her eye on the tall smooth talker and had even warned her friends to watch out for him, and not be swayed by his good looks and charm. Luckily she didn't take her own advice, they were happily married for 64 years during which their love continued to grow, remaining each other's best friends.
After their marriage, she dedicated her time to raising her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. Family, friends and neighbours were always welcome and often seen spending time at the family home and cottage. Mom also supported many community based activities and was a long-time member of P.E.O.
We will remember Mom/Nana for many things, including her strength and courage during the toughest of times, her hard work and devotion to family and friends, and her warm acceptance of all of our friends and neighbours at our home and cottage. Her straight forward approach to dealing with BS usually included her telling someone to "Get the shovel out". Her most outstanding trait was her amazing sense of humour and quick wit that she carried with her to her last breath. She always said "if my sense of humour is the last thing to go I'll be very happy".
Mom lived in the same house she and Dad built in the 1950s, we are thankful that her daughter Eileen was able to stay with Mom to enable her to stay in our home. We are also fortunate that she had many great neighbour friends that did so much for Mom over the last few years.
The family would like to express our appreciation to the Fire Paramedics, Ambulance crew and the wonderful nurses and doctors at the Grace Hospital for the compassionate care they provided Mom.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the ALS Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
As per Mom's request cremation has taken place and a small family funeral will be held.

"Say Hi to Dad and Neil, we love you!"

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Spent many hours with her twin sons (Doug & Neil) & younger Bobby. The twins would always tell me stories of How their Mother used to chase them around with a cord to keep "them in line". It is strange when you read the Obituary how little I knew of that person. Mrs. Preston was in my TOP FIVE ADULTS, what I knew of her only "scratched the surface" of her true personality. I can still drive by the house on Rita Street and remember her and the boys (Nice Pic in Obit) Thank you for the memories. geoffrey_metcalf@hotmail.com or 431-335-1971 Texting is your Best Bet - Posted by: Geoffrey Metcalf (family/friend) on: Nov 26, 2024

  • Great lady who always treated all of us Rita Boys with respect and love, even when deserving the respect was suspect! Grilling us over sandwiches in the kitchen on our daily rompings around the neighborhood....testing our abilities to stretch the truth, seeing right thru us, and still sending us back out into the world knowing we were always welcome at The Preston Place. One of the most classic senses of humour I have ever known. Precise and to the point. LOL! All the years at the cabin, from the early years up to the past few, keeping tabs on her boys and ensuring we're on the straight and narrow. But always with a sense of freedom. That's why I loved her. She'll be greatly missed by this Rita Street kid. Blessed to have known her. Picturing her with Neil and Don, looking down on us, chuckling at our follies.... - Posted by: Harvey Downes (Family Friend) on: Oct 30, 2019
