GUENTHER KARL PONTO
1945 - 2019
Karl was born in Olmuetz, Czechoslovakia near the end of the Second World War. As an infant, Karl, his six older siblings and their mother travelled on foot and by baby carriage to Austria before making their way to Germany when Karl was a toddler. He received training in the trades in Germany, and in 1960 Karl and his mother immigrated to Winnipeg to join his sister Freida and her family. There, Karl attended school and helped with farm work, earning top grades in English in his school by the end of the year. He worked in various trades for much of his life thereafter, with his focus being in the arts, in wood carving and music, selling his wares at the very first Winnipeg Folk Festival and being part of a Juno winning music album in 2009. He struggled with and unexpectedly beat lung cancer in 2007, and lived to see his daughter get married in 2013 and have his first grandchild in 2016.
He was predeceased by his parents, Karl and Elizabeth, and former wife Glenna.
He is survived by his siblings: Edmund, Freida, Resi, Lydia, Sylvia and Maria, and their spouses, numerous nieces and nephews, his cousins, Norbert Kuehn and Sig Laser, his daughter Carmen, son-in-law Tyler, and grandson Finley.
A private service will be held in Karl's honour in the days to come.

Karl’s stone and wood carvings were fluid and organic. They were not complete until they felt right in the hand and were pleasing to the eye. - Posted by: Bill Lawrence (Brother-in-law) on: Nov 10, 2019
