ANNA STELMASCHUK
Anna is predeceased by her husband Prof. Paul Stelmaschuk. Surviving Anna are her two beloved sons, Michael Davids (Marion), of Winnipeg, and Stephen Davids of Quebec City; her most beloved grandsons, Jacob (Jake), Sean, Benjamin (Ben) and Joel Davids; an aunt; and cousins in Winnipeg, across Canada and in Japan. Also left to remember their stepmother and grandmother are members of Prof. Stelmaschuk's family in Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria and Australia.
Anna grew up an only child in Canora, SK, a prairie town still showing definite signs of pioneering days. She graduated from high school during the heady days of progress following the Second World War. After graduation she attended a business college in Winnipeg and later taught at this college. After her marriage in 1952 to Nicholas Davids, she and her husband lived in Winnipeg where their first son was born. The family moved to Edmonton in 1956 where their second son was born and where Anna became the sole guardian and provider for her sons.
In 1974 she married Prof. Paul Stelmaschuk and returned to Winnipeg where he was Director of the School of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba. In her lifetime, music, writing and study were mainstays - work which was begun in childhood, singing with church choirs, school activities and festivals. In Edmonton she was a member of the Edmonton Opera Chorus for several years, while continuing her voice training under the tutelage of a pedagogue from the Kiev Opera Company. She and her husband were members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its affiliated organizations; Anna was a member for eight years of the Manitoba Provincial Council of Women, an umbrella organization for many diverse provincial women's groups, both religious and secular.
She and her husband retired in Kelowna, BC in 1986, where Anna served on the Kelowna Symphony Board and was a regular hospital volunteer as well as an active participant in other women's groups. She has published a book, titled Prairie Winds, a biographic sketch of her childhood and growing years in Canora, using written memoirs, diaries, letters, pictures and family discussions. A copy is on file in the archives in Ottawa.
Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul. Reception to follow.
