He is survived by his children, Linda (Lyle), Donna (Ray), Judy (Sid), Dan (Fern) and Ben (Tammy); grandchildren, Matt, Adam, Julie (Sasha), Candy (Wayne), Steven (Crystal), Jennifer (Matt), Rhys, Parker, and Hunter; great-grandchildren, Dawson, Zachary, Jex, Dax, Aspen, Paxton, and Madelyn, sisters, Signe, Alma, Elsie and Carol.
Nels was born on August 5, 1927 in Gammalsvenskby, Ukraine. He and his parents immigrated to Canada in 1930 spending the winter in Wetaskiwin, AB with family, where his mother Christina passed away. They eventually made their way to Meadows, MB moving there in April of 1931. His uncle and aunt, Andrew and Julianna, raised him until his father remarried Emma Hoas. Nels farmed with his father and when his uncle passed away took over his share of the farm. Nels married the love of his life, Janet Pott June 14, 1952. They were married for 66 years until her death in 2018. In 1966, due to illness, Nels sold the farm and moved his family to Winnipeg, MB then to Rosser, MB in 1970 where he was very involved in the community. Dad had a long career in the accounting field eventually retiring from the Canadian Wheat Board. In retirement he and Janet moved into Courts of St. James and finally Sterling House Assisted Living.
A funeral service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 600 Cambridge Street, Winnipeg, MB at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2019 with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery.
We would like to thank the staff and residence of Sterling House for making Dad feel welcome and at home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

In my possession is a cherished photo of our dads at 16 - Nils Hoas & Nels Malmas at the confirmation in Winnipeg. Left Gammelsvenskby as children, grew up in Meadows. Each left farming and forged new careers. Both had five children. Both had lifelong partners/marriages. While Nels was not my uncle through blood relationship, he and Aunt Jenny were family. His adoptive Mom Emma being my Dad's sister. And we as children, often in family gatherings running around those conjoined farms in Meadows so long ago now. Nothing replaces talking to them, or a hug, or just being in a room with them. But a hug to you all in the final goodbye and so sorry I/ we are not there in person.
