VERNON DAVID SMITH
July 24, 1948 - December 12, 2019
Vernon was predeceased by his father Eldon Smith, and mother Elizabeth Smith.
He is mourned by his loving wife of 50 years, Patricia; his daughter Deborah; sons, Terence, Kevin (Pauline) and Brian; grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, and Amalie.
Vernon grew up on a farm near Woodlands, Manitoba. Often on horseback, he cherished the rugged country life. From a young age he worked alongside his dad in heavy construction. In 1968, Vernon and wife Patricia moved to Thompson, Manitoba. Shortly after relocating to Wabowden, Manitoba they started a trucking, and construction business. Vernon was a hard worker who was not afraid of any project. A talented mechanic and master welder, he liked to do his own fleet maintenance. He was humble, and fair to people.
For 17 years Vernon was also the Fire Chief for the Community of Wabowden, and also a First Responder who coordinated the Ambulance Service with Patricia by his side. A member of the Fire College of Manitoba, he was critical about proper equipment and training. He established a new Fire Hall for the community along with new emergency service vehicles. He was an avid fundraiser, and there were countless suppers, socials, and Santa Claus parades during that time.
Vernon enjoyed being on the lake fishing. He was a great man who loved his family, and always made time for friends, even strangers.
He will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 23, 2019 at 11:30 a.m., at Meadow Lea Community Centre near Marquette, Manitoba with Pastor Will Feldbusch.
