JOSEPH (JOZSEF) MATYI
March 19, 1934 - December 16, 2019

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Matyi, beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Joe was surrounded by his loved ones as he passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
Left to mourn his passing and cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Barbara, son John (Angèle), daughter Elizabeth (Sean), grandchildren, Alex, Céline (Justin) and Jack, brother János and other family members in Hungary.
Joe was born in Nyirkarász, Hungary. He immigrated to Canada in 1957 after the Hungarian Revolution and settled in Winnipeg. Joe enjoyed working as an electrician for the Canadian Pacific Railway for 40 years. He loved his work and even after his retirement, continued to share many stories about his times in the Weston shops.
Friends knew Joe as a hardworking family man. He was a talented troubleshooter who was always fixing something. Joe was a fun-loving man who enjoyed dancing and music. His dancing shoes were always ready for a csárdas or polka.
It was clear to all who knew him that Joe's family was his pride and delight. Each of his grandchildren shared a special bond with their Nagypapa who left them with many wonderful memories, including times at the family cottage at Caddy Lake and incredible trips to Hungary and Jamaica.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to palliative nurse Sean and staff at Grace Hospice for their exceptional care of Joe.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Hospice or the MS Society of Manitoba.
Funeral liturgy will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., on December 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Peter Nemcek presiding. Interment to follow.
