MADELEINE ARMOUR ORR NUGENT
Madeleine is survived by her loving daughters and their spouses: Linda (Peter), Lorna (Tom), Roslyn, Judith (Grant), Alison (Doug) and Jennifer (Patrick); 15 wonderful grandchildren: Joseph, Ajaleigh, David, Ian, Hilary, Laura, Michael, Melanie, Amy, Sarah, Lindsey, Graham, Scott, Kathleen and Michael; 10 adorable great-grandchildren: Alexandre, Tori-Lynn, Rylan, Joe, Kiera, Jameson, Lily, Penelope, Macallan and Alina; brother-in-law Jack Bennett, sister-in-law Lily Gibson, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Madeleine was predeceased by her husband Ross, parents, Isabelle (Orr) and Bill Gibson, sister Betty Vouriot, and brother Bill Gibson.
Madeleine was born in Winnipeg on May 20, 1925. She met Ross while attending Daniel McIntyre High School. The sport of basketball brought them together and they married in 1949. Madeleine worked at Canadian Fire and Canadian Indemnity while Ross completed law school. Shortly thereafter they started a family and were blessed with six lively daughters. Madeleine was a wonderful mother and excellent role model for her children. She spent many hours teaching them to read, write, cook, sew, garden and play sports.
The grandchildren have especially fond memories of Madeleine. She would always encourage them to come for a swim in the pool on hot, summer days and they knew she always had a good assortment of after swim treats.
Madeleine volunteered her time to several organizations. For many years, she supported St. Peter's Anglican Church as president of the altar guild, convener of the annual church tea, and together with Ross, was active in church fundraising. She also enjoyed her involvement with Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg and things supporting the Royal Winnipeg Ballet over several years.
Spending time with family and friends was very important to Madeleine. She was ready to help, comfort and support others whenever needed, and enjoyed having family and friends together for Sunday evening meals. She was also keenly interested in stock investing, playing bridge and refinishing furniture. Gardening was also a life-long hobby which gave her much enjoyment and happiness.
One of Madeleine's significant accomplishments was obtaining her Arts degree from the University of Winnipeg. She enjoyed the challenges of learning and received her Bachelor of Arts, Major of Economics in her early 70s.
The family is extremely grateful to the many caregivers especially Enie, Erika, Marilyn and Robyn who supported Madeleine and provided her with much needed comfort, companionship and happiness over many years. Also, our thanks to Dr. Al Schroeder for the excellent medical care and attention provided to Madeleine.
A service and celebration of Madeleine's life will be held in May, 2020.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
