MAHADEO MOHAN SOOKSAGAR MAHARAJ
1935 - 2019
"It is our belief that the Soul is part of the Divine Essence and by nature, pure and perfect, infinite in power and blessed, was never created, will never die, but will pass from stage to stage until it achieves perfection." (Upanishads) Mahadeo was born April 19, 1935 in Penal, Trinidad, West Indies, and is the oldest son of the late Sooksagar Balgobin Maharaj and Dhanwantiya Sooksagar. He moved to Winnipeg in 1969 with his wife, Camal Maharaj and their four children. It was their dream to provide an exceptional future for their children.Over the next 50 years Mahadeo sought to build a strong foundation for his family, a foundation that would include the best of the culture he left behind and Canadian culture. Being a gentle and friendly man, he quickly established a strong foundation in which his family would thrive. It is due to his foresight, willpower, and strong faith in the Hindu scriptures that their dream of an exceptional future for their children was fulfilled.
Mahadeo now joins his late wife, Camal Maharaj, who recently passed away: December 14, 2019. Their great love for one another has now joined them in this new journey together. He leaves behind his four children, their spouses and partner: Suenita (Sudhir), Anjanie (Dave), Vidya (Allan) and Winston (Nardia). He also leaves his greatest legacy, seven grandchildren: Anjali, Darius, Antara, Shivani, Anaka, Tamir and Anya. In addition to his children and grandchildren, he leaves behind siblings: Doolin James, Narine Sooksagar, Dularie Rajkumarsingh and Jahaj Maharaj. He will be dearly missed by his family including cousins, nieces and nephews from across Canada, USA, Trinidad and the UK.
Mahadeo was predeceased by his sisters: Rajo, Dolly and Sheila, and his brothers: Ramnarine and Rampersad.
The family would like to thank Victoria Hospital staff: nurses, Honey, Rita and student nurse Rajesh for their compassionate care during his final hours. For his doctor of 40 years, Dr. Sharkey, words cannot express the gratitude we have for his kind, compassionate care of our father; he often went above and beyond what was expected. We also thank the many private caregivers who lovingly cared for our father. Many thanks and appreciation to Pundit Balram and Lalita Monguru for their guidance and support.
Funeral service was held on Monday, December 23 at 9:00 a.m., at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his name to the Alzheimer Society.
