MAX DAVID ARMSTRONG
June 21, 1925 - December 20, 2019
We take comfort in knowing that he is joining his wife of 37 years, Monique who passed away on January 5, 2019. Max was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth (Bessie) and Chester and his siblings, Lee, Weir, Glen, Diane and Dale.
He is survived by his sister Carol (Robert), his sister-in-law Alberta and his children and extended family, Michael (Tracey), Terri (Jim), April (Manfred), Karen (Fred), Paula, Teresa, Donna, Chris (Susan), Gilbert, Chantal (Raymond), Joël (Susan), Milhau, Renaud and Jolaine. Max was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Max was born in Burk's Falls, ON. He moved his family to Winnipeg with his first wife, Pat in 1966 as Manager of Sales with Simon Day Ltd. where he ended his career as VP of Sales at Carter Day. He was well known and respected in the grain industry for his expertise. Max was awarded a Life Membership in the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS).
Shortly after our arrival in Winnipeg, Max sat on the Board for the building of Saint John XXIII Catholic Church. He was choir director for over 40 years. One of his proudest moments was to receive the Benemerenti medal from Pope John Paul II, issued at the Vatican on December 31, 1994 to honour outstanding Christian activity.
Music was an important part of Max's life. We have pictures of Max playing the banjo at three years of age. His musical talents continued to progress and he was recognized as one of the premier tenor banjo players in Winnipeg. You could hand him any instrument and he could play the scale within minutes. Our house was filled with an accordion, banjo uke, banjo, trumpet, trombone, drums, guitars, violin, mandolin and of course maracas and tambourines. Every family gathering inevitably ended with music and song. These past years the halls of Golden West resounded with Max playing the piano and Monique and Max singing the song "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" which we think was their personal love song!
Despite the debilitating progression of Alzheimer's, Max never lost his sense of humour. He kept the staff at Golden West in stitches telling jokes.
Max, you will be loved and missed by your Armstrong and Gagne family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 30 at Saint John XXIII Catholic Church, 3390 Portage Avenue and will proceed to Chapel Lawn for inurnment followed by refreshments.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Khris and the staff of Golden West Centennial Lodge for their care and support these past three years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Max's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Saint John XXIII Church or a charity of your choice.
