MALCOLM JOHN KENNETH MACLEOD
Malcolm was born July 27, 1926 in Melfort, Saskatchewan and was the eldest of eight children. His family lived in small towns in Saskatchewan before moving to Winnipeg where Malcolm completed his high school at United College stating his favourite subjects were Math and Public Speaking.
He married the love of his life, Hazel, in 1946 after meeting her at a YMCA teen canteen dance. He believes he fell in love with her after their first dance. They had three children and moved a few times, always in the city of Winnipeg. He worked as a Manufacturers Agent for a number of companies in sales and then ran his own Paint and Wallpaper Store in Charleswood.
He and Hazel retired at age 55 years to enjoy the slower rural hobby farm life. Mac felt purchasing The Farm as one of his greatest accomplishments. He always enjoyed the outdoor physical work and when asked what was a favourite way to spend a day of leisure, his reply was working outside, cutting grass or gardening, lunch of egg salad sandwich and cream soda, nine holes of golf at Sandy Hook Golf Club, supper of pork spareribs, a hot tub bath and a good baseball game on tv.
Malcolm loved sports and played baseball, hockey, curling and golf avidly. His hero was always Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, who Malcolm claimed was the greatest hitter of all time.
He was always very involved in the community where he lived, being President of Weston Community Centre for four years, President of Thistle Curling Club, becoming an elder and Chairman of the Board at St. Vital Presbyterian Church, and being President of the Gimli Rotary Club. His claim to fame was being made an "outstanding citizen" of Winnipeg by the then Mayor Juba.
He was also very involved with the Rotary Club both in Gimli and in Conway, South Carolina, close to Myrtle Beach where he and Hazel spent 20 warm and enjoyable winters. Malcolm and Hazel loved to travel and after they purchased their first vehicle in 1957, they spent many summer weeks camping which Dad always made so much fun.
They travelled extensively around the world often visiting their children.
Dad considered life's greatest gift, as "Family". He included all the extensive family whom he welcomed at any time. He wants to be remembered as a good and loving father, husband and friend. He said, "If my friends refer to me as "he was a good guy", I'll be happy."
Malcolm is survived by his daughter, Karen Mueller (Fred), daughter, Kristen Booth (Donald); grandchildren, Christopher (Suselle), Andrea (Giullio); Alana (Imants), Jamie (Carmen); great-grandchildren, Alex, Ekaterina , Matteo, Nico, Linnea, Mila, Taage, Teagan and Paige; surviving siblings, Kathryn, Marlyn (Walter), Dawn (Horst), Ian (Joy), and Terry ( Ron).
A celebratory service was held along with his wife Hazel on Sunday, December 22 at Gimli Lutheran Church honoured by family and friends.
The family wants to recognize the compassionate care Dad received not only by the Gimli Betel staff but also by the Gimli Dialysis staff. They are also grateful for the dedication of loyal friends and volunteers.
Donations in Mac's memory can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or to the charity of your choice.
He was larger than life with a great sense of humour! Dad...we will always carry your memory in our hearts!
