DORIS ILEAIN CORMACK
1933 - 2019
Born in Grandview, MB in 1933 to Leo and Matilda Donald, Doris was the second youngest in a family of nine children. An avid baseball player and curler, Doris graduated high school and started her work life at the Grandview Post Office - where she would eventually meet the love of her life, Donald Kenneth Cormack (Ken). They married on June 27, 1953 and moved to Winnipeg, MB where Ken continued his teaching career. Their 54-year union was filled with much love and was blessed with three children, four grandchildren and three great-grand-children.
Ken, Doris, and family resided in Winnipeg where Doris worked for Great-West Life Assurance prior to staying at home to raise their children, and then began her long and successful career as a statistician at Child and Family Services.
Doris was predeceased by her father, mother, and stepfather (Pa Jim), husband Ken who passed away on January 7, 2007, and her sisters, Jen (Richard), Esther (George) and Minnie, brothers, Jim, Bob, Les (Sally) and Doug, and niece Colleen.
Doris is survived by her three children: son Kevin (Lu), and grandson Colin (Jennifer) and their children, Caelan, Braendan and Leah; son Kelly and his sons, Kyle, Noah and Landon; and daughter Katherine (Eric Mueller); brother John; sisters-in-law, Ellie and Mary; and, very special "brother" Roger Donald (Linda). Doris cherished her many nieces and nephews: Bob (Gayle), Maureen (Brian), Murray (Sally) and Michele (Gord); Patricia and Don; Sandy Lynn, Jimmy (Barb) and John (Melissa); Karen (Bill) and Keith (Linda); Mary Ellen (Harvey), Leo and Sue (Ian); and Jenny. Doris appreciated the special friendship of Maureen Bell and the late Joan Groot.
Doris and Ken's early years together were filled with rowing escapades in the "Dory Ken" and gliding adventures across Manitoba's sunny skies. Many happy family holidays were spent at the Thorogoods' at Gull Lake, Miss Hecter's at Betula Lake, and later at the Cormack cottage at St. Malo, and, of course, visits to Grandview.
Ken's diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis early in their marriage did not deter the couple, though it did pose myriad challenges throughout their lives together. Through it all, Doris encouraged, cared and advocated for Ken. And, in between, she gardened until the sun went down, fed her creative spirit through ceramics, and visited with friends and family. Soon after Ken's death, Doris was diagnosed with dementia, which she battled until the end.
The family would like to thank the staff at Misericordia Place for their kind and gentle care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doris' memory to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral service will take place on Friday, January 3, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with interment and reception following.

Doris was a favourite MP3 Resident to visit with. Most often she was charmed by Ellie, and very friendly with, and complementary to the two of us. - Noreen's last memory of Doris was when, while sitting in the hall together we heard music and singing in the common area. As I sang along with the group from afar, and rocked back and forth holding your Mom's hands, Doris suggested we go together to the singsong - which we did. It was one of the many 'happy Doris' memories I treasure. Most often she was very affirming of my presence, and was very welcoming of Ellie. - Once when visiting on MP3, Glenn's vivid memory of Doris is: As was typical she was eating a late breakfast. When Glenn asked how she liked her oatmeal porridge, Doris looked him in the eye and said: "I'd like to pour this bowl right over your head!" Glenn laughed. Doris laughed. And then she looked at Glenn and said: "Nice to see you." i.e. The true Doris shining through. Go in peace and love Doris. - Posted by: Noreen & Glenn Duncan & wee "Ellie" (St John Ambulance Therapy Dog Volunteer handlers and Biewer Terrier Ellie .. visiting wrth Doris and) on: Jan 25, 2020

Thanks so much for mentioning my mother Joan Groot. Not only was Doris my mom's treasured friend, she was also my treasured neighbour. I lived across the street from Doris for many years while raising my two boys as a single parent. Doris kept a watchful eye on us and always greeted us with her vibrant smile and kind words. One fond memory is the time Doris came over with an armload of groceries when I was going through a rough patch. She was a lovely lovely lady. - Posted by: Janice Glenwright Marlow (Neighbour) on: Jan 02, 2020
