JACK GOERTZEN

On December 12, 2019, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Jack Goertzen aged 99, beloved husband of Blanche Goertzen (1948 to 1976) and Stephanie Goertzen (1977 to 2019), passed away.
Jack leaves to mourn his passing three daughters, Jocelyn and her husband Jim of Winnipeg, Christine from Winnipeg and Laurel and partner Rick Ritchie from Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba, a very large extended family with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Blanche in 1976, and recently by his second wife, Stephanie, in June 2019. He was also the last survivor of a family of 10 children.
Dad was born in Sergievka, Russia on September 24, 1920. The family immigrated to Canada in 1927 landing in Halifax and from there taking the train to their final destination in Winnipeg.
Dad was a "Jack" of all trades, trying many things in his life; he farmed, was a radio announcer, worked construction and drove for Winnipeg Transit to name a few. In later years he found his love in piano tuning which he did until he retired.
Dad's true passions in life were music and golfing. He had a very rich baritone voice, singing periodically with the Winnipeg Philharmonic choir, as well as with the Augustine United Church Choir for many years. The strength and power in his voice followed him through his years right to the end.
He also golfed every opportunity he could. In later years when he could no longer play, he spent many hours reminiscing on places he had golfed and games he could still remember almost stroke by stroke.
A perfect game in life for Jack would have been to make 100 years of age. Unfortunately, he came in one over par, still a remarkable score.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery).

Hopi Prayer
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet white doves in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I was very saddened to hear of Jack’s passing. We first met Jack at Grand Pines Golf Course when he had his cottage at Belair. Every Saturday for many years Jack would meet us at twilight on the first tee and play a round of golf with my husband and I. Then when he sold the cottage he still faithfully drove out to the lake each Saturday to get in a game which he loved so much. By then many of his regular buddies had given up the game and he relished the thought of still having an opportunity to play. Once golfing became impossible, each year on his birthday and at Christmas time we would be in touch and catch up on where life had taken us both. Our condolences to his family. We will miss him. • My sincere condolences on your loss. I pray that memories of happier times will see you through your time of grief! "God gave us memory so we might enjoy roses in winter." I am a respected researcher of Mennonite genealogy, and would like to connect your loved one to his/your family and ancestry, which I am unable to do given the information in his obituary. My on-line project contains over 500,000 individuals, including many Goertzens, but no identifiable link to Jack or his family and ancestry. Who were his parents and siblings? When/where were they born and die? Please contact me at an appropriate time if you are willing to share/exchange details. Thank you. All information about living individuals is suppressed to protect your/their privacy. - Posted by: Bob Strong (Unknown) on: Jan 05, 2020

  • I remember Jack for his golf outings and his marriage to my sister Blanch. I also fancied his choice of luxury automobiles, and riding in the rumble seat of his Packard and Monarch convertibles. His farm near Homewood provided the bare essentials for accommodation and meals, but at my young age staying there was a challenge. My sympathies to his daughters on loosing a colourful dad. • Was very appreciative of Jack’s many trips to the Stonewall-Balmoral area for his piano tuning skills. He always entertained by playing and singing when his work was done, and telling stories of his life. His work was respected by the local music teachers. Condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Cheryl Willis (Piano tuning customer) on: Jan 04, 2020
