ELLERT JONAS THORLAKSON
He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his children, Linda (Gordon) and Ken (Patti) of Toronto; and grandchildren, Andrea, Jocelyn, Jonas, Gwyneth, Gareth and Dave. Predeceased by his beloved wife Aldis, and daughter Barbara; brothers, Frank and Barney; sisters, Kay, Sybil, and Pearl.
Born on January 22, 1922 to Ellert and Lara Thorlaksson, he was raised in Winnipeg Beach. He learned fishing and carpentry, making his living in construction once he moved to Winnipeg. His skills were well known and with the support of Aldis he ran his own successful construction business in the later years of his working life. In retirement, they enjoyed many holidays including a trip to Iceland and several to Hawaii with his brother Barney and his wife Jean.
He seemed to work all the time, even at the family cottage, constantly expanding, repairing or fixing things and finding ingenious (and economical) solutions to problems. He was proud of the family home that he also built, and after his wife's passing in 1997, worked hard to remain independent living there. He kept busy with rug hooking, reading, and playing cribbage and whist at the Legion. He was most proud of his family and all of his grandchildren, and with his thoughtful and methodical approach to everything he did he gave them a lasting sense of a life built by hand.
He adamantly did not want to go into a care home, so with the support of Linda and Gordon and good neighbours Mel and Sherry, fought his infirmities and was able to "do it his way", staying in his house until his last hospital stay in December. A special thanks to all of the home care staff who checked in on him regularly and often marvelled at his character as they helped him maintain the independence, he so valued.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, January 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, 525 Wardlaw, Reverend Marc Whitehead officiating.
Donations, if desired, to the CFRUC Accessibility Fund or Habitat for Humanity.

So many, many memories. As a child growing up we always listened when he spoke, vacations, family gatherings, Christmas, and later coffee when he visited mom. Such a great family to grow up in. My condolences to Linda, Ken and your families. I know he will be missed immensely. Blessings, hugs, and prayers. Sandi Godard - Posted by: Sandi (Neice) on: Mar 24, 2021
