ALICE (MARY) BANCROFT
Mary, who was born in Portsmouth, England, was predeceased by her parents, brothers and special friend Joan Gauer.
Mary's teaching career spanned 41 years, commencing in the UK and then onto the US and finally settling in Canada. She taught Science, English, Physical Education and was a guidance counsellor. Here in Winnipeg she taught at Elmwood High School and Grant Park High School from where she retired.
After retirement, Mary spent many years as a dedicated volunteer at Fort Whyte Alive. She took great pride in her volunteer work, "I volunteer because I am retired from work, not life."
Mary moved into the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence in July 2008. She was proud to be one of the first tenants of the facility. Mary felt very much at home here and was even featured on one of their television advertisements. Although Mary described herself as a dog lover she was surprised when she found so much enjoyment in her cat Daisy, who came into Mary's life shortly before moving into Shaftesbury. Mary and Daisy were very social and could always be seen in the main lobby where they were always greeted by their neighbours. Mary would always say Daisy got more hellos than she did.
Mary will be greatly missed by her group of close friends.
In keeping with Mary's wishes cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held.
Also in accordance with Mary's wishes, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

I groomed Mary’s wonderful schnauzers, Kate and Maggie, from 1991-2002 while she lived in the Westwood area. She was a lovely woman, I always enjoyed our chats. She certainly was an animal lover! - Posted by: Lorna Wiess (Dog groomer) on: Feb 01, 2020

Thank you for sharing this tribute and so evident that she touched a lot of lives along the way with her energy and enthusiasm (yes I loved the TV ad). Mary was a much appreciated member of Deer Lodge Ladies Curling Club. It’s been a few years since we’ve had the pleasure of her company but she will be remembered as a classy woman with a love of life and a big sense of humour even in adversity. - Posted by: Joan Greenlay (Friend) on: Jan 13, 2020
