DOROTHY ELIZABETH HOWARD
March 15, 1926 - January 5, 2020
Dorothy was born in Winnipeg, one of seven children of Frank and Edith Newman. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Gordon, and her sisters, Nicky, Edith and Marlene.
Dorothy will be greatly missed by her husband of 65 years, Dick, her son Gordon (Ruth), her grandsons, Kevin (Renée) and Ryan, and great-grandsons, Linden and Ellis. She is survived by her sisters, Pat and Diane.
In her youth Dorothy was involved in several sports activities including speed skating, synchronized swimming and skiing.
Soon after she finished with school at Daniel McIntyre, she began a career with Eaton's as a comptometer operator. At Eaton's she met her loving husband Dick and they were married soon after. Shortly after the marriage their son Gordon was born.
Dorothy was a caring mother who instilled the value of hard work in Gordon and was 100% behind everything he wanted to try.
Some activities that Dorothy pursued in her young adult years were curling at the Rossmere Curling Club and swimming at the Elmwood Kildonan Y. At the Y she spent many hours teaching swimming, and lifeguarding after attaining Royal Lifesaving Society designations. She greatly enjoyed her time at these endeavours and she met new friends in the community as a result.
Later in her life Dorothy worked in retail clothing at Hollingsworth's and then Grey's. Later she helped out at "Things", the R.W.B.'s consignment store.
Dorothy was a marvellous homemaker. She spent a great deal of time maintaining their lovely home, and had a true love of gardening. She liked to ensure that the gardens in the yard looked "just so", and tended to her small vegetable plot with pride. Time at home was also spent sewing and knitting. She made some wonderful things for many people over the years.
Dorothy loved to be with her grandchildren and always made time for them. She was often a fan at their sporting events and piano recitals. On several occasions she travelled with Gordon's family on vacations to be with Kevin and Ryan.
Dorothy was a gracious hostess for guests and family, and dinner at grammas was always special.
Thank you to the staff at Holy Family Home who took such great care of Dorothy for the past number of years.
A funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., with viewing prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.

Dorothy was one of best sisters I could have ever asked for. Growing up - all of us girls looked up to her - she took the time to teach us so many things an older sister would do. She cared for our Mom when she needed it, our sisters when they needed to be cared for. She was a great Aunt to my children. I have missed her and will continue to do so...She will be forever in my prayers and my heart... Dick, Gordon, Ruth, Kevin ( Renee), Ryan, Linden and Ellis - Sorry for this loss of this beautiful soul - May your memories help you through these days ahead. With the Deepest, Heartfelt Love and Sadness, Love Patricia - Posted by: Patricia Newman ( Cade ) (Sister) on: Jan 14, 2020

We are very saddened to hear of the loss of our beautiful Auntie Dorothy. We have the nicest memories of her growing up - She taught us - Sharon and Shawn - the Twins - how to sew. We took the bus for months to spend the weekends as we learned how to sew our own dresses that we wore to our grade 9 graduation. What pride we had that day telling all of our friends that our Aunt taught us and that we made them ourselves. We loved her beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. We never saw her any other way then smiling. She had such love and pride for her son Gordon (our cousin) and then for his wife Ruth and their children. Her home and garden were kept so beautifully - we dreamt of one day growing up and being just like her - so organized, so loving, laughing and always greeting everyone with open arms. We moved to Calgary when we were in our early 20s so we didn’t get to see her a lot but thought of her often. She will be forever be in our hearts.
