JOSEPH ALEXANDER LOWRY
April 12, 1927 - January 25, 2020

On the morning of January 25, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer, Joe passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 71 years, Jennie, at his side.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Jennie Lowry (Markevich); daughter Roberta (Steve) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; son Don (Norine) of Edmonton, Alberta; granddaughter Jennifer (Mark) of Edmonton, Alberta; granddaughter Kathryn of Calgary, Alberta; great-grandchildren, Max and Hallie of Edmonton, Alberta. Joe is also survived by his brother-in-law John Helmer of Coquitlam, BC; as well as many nephews and nieces from the Darlingford, Manitoba area.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Adeline and Alex Lowry; stepfather Bill Campbell; sisters, Mary (Jim Wood), Bea (Haref Rassmussen), Madeleine (Russ Waddingham), and Ruth (John Helmer).
Following his railway career as Chief Superintendent of the Burlington Northern Railway, Dad lived a full and rich life, travelling the world with Mom, and enjoying time spent with his grandchildren, Jennifer and Kathryn Lowry, and great-grandchildren, Max and Hallie.
Looking back on his career and life's adventures, Dad had no regrets, kept a smile on his face, and retained the sparkle in his eye and good sense of humour to the very end.
In consideration that Dad hosted his "going away party" in the fall of last year, there will be no formal funeral held, rather there will be a family graveside service in the spring at Darlingford, Manitoba.

  • I have many warm memories of Joe from all the Markevich clan gatherings of my youth: Christmases, birthdays, summer barbecues, Grey Cups, etc. My thoughts are with you Jenny, Roberta and Don. - Posted by: Christine Hansen (niece) on: Feb 01, 2020

  • Jill and I are saddened to hear of Mr. Lowry’s passing. We have fond memories of the time we were neighbours and will never forget all of the things he did for us.
