JOHANNA P. (ANNE) RICHARDSON
(nee BAIS) MOORE-HENNING

Anne passed away January 24, 2020, at age 98, after a long and full life.
She was born November 30, 1921, in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, third child of Simon and Marie (nee Vanderdrift) Bais, immigrants from the Netherlands who farmed with oxen and lived in a sod house. As an infant she, with the family, moved to Fort Frances, Ontario. Another move at age five took the family to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she attended school until yet another move took them to a farm at Meadows, Manitoba, where she enjoyed the farm and riding horses.
June, 1938, at age 16, she left home to work in Winnipeg where she had resided since. Her employment included caring for elders, Hudson Bay Co., John Irving Fuel, Winnipeg Hearing Aids, Pine Funeral Sales and H&R Block.
On New Year's Eve, 1939, while home for the holidays, she met Douglas H. Moore serving with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. After he returned from 16 months in Jamaica and Bermuda they wed on October 20, 1941. Five days later he left for Hong Kong where he died September 18, 1942, while a prisoner of war.
In 1946 she met and married Ivan Henning shortly after his return from active service in Europe. Their 27 years together were very busy and fulfilling. Many years were spent with bowling, golf, camping and fishing and, finally, a cabin near Kenora, Ontario. Shortly after Ivan and Anne wed she became a member of the W. F. P. B. A. Executive. She was the first woman to become Tournament Chairperson of the Five-Pin Assoc. After serving several years and then acting as treasurer for the Western and Canadian bowling championships she received a Life Membership. Anne also served on the Executive of a Mixed Ladies league and Social Club. All this ended in 1974 when Ivan died suddenly of cancer.
Through a mutual friend she met Walter Richardson and later they became engaged and set a wedding date. Shortly after he was diagnosed with cancer. She cared for him for six months and, while in hospital, they wed in the MHS Chapel on their chosen date. He passed away June 27, 1977, 13 days later.
After being widowed she joined Club 66 and took an active Executive part, bowling, dancing, curling, cross-country and cards. She was the first to win their Triple Crown bowling trophy. Another bowling highlight was a 940 triple in the Eagles Mixed League.
She later joined #4 Legion and their senior group and derived much enjoyment from the comradery, dancing, whist games and the many visits to nursing homes with their singing group. She rarely missed the seniors meetings at #4 Legion or the Hong Kong Association meetings each month, travelling by bus but also driving her Buick when she felt up to it until age 95. She stayed in her own home for 32 years, finally giving it up and moving into a suite at 88 years of age. At age 98, she still did all her own cleaning and cooking her meals. She kept in touch with her sister and many of her relatives faithfully with cards and phone calls.
Anne is survived by her sister Marie Ufland, Calgary, AB; daughter Margaret L. Coleman (Eliz) (RN, MPH, CNM) of Colorado, USA; grandson Michael; and great-granddaughter McKenzie of Edmonton, AB; sister-in-law Pat Bais of Winnipeg; and three generations of nieces and nephews. She so appreciated the help and caring she received from some, they know who they are.
She was predeceased by her mother in 1949; her father in 1954; brother Jack, 1995; sister Henrietta, 1999; and brother John, 2000. Also sister-in-law Jean Bais; brother-in-law Reuben Riege; Emil Ufland; and nephews, Gustav Riege and Robert Bais.
Six nephews and niece will, with much appreciation, act as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2020, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.

  • I think I can speak in behalf of our Over 55 Whist Club that Anne will truly be missed. She was always a positive person in spite of her health and difficulties. She was warm, friendly and a great person to play whist with. Anne and I had many great conversations and I and Maria will personally miss her smile and positive personality. - Posted by: Joseph Brown (Friend - Fellow menber of the over 55 Whist Club-St. James no.4 Royal Canadian legion) on: Feb 01, 2020
