PAT RYE

Peacefully, with her daughters by her side, Pat passed away on February 20, 2020 at the ripe old age of 98 years.
She will be missed by her children, Lee Rye, Marilyn Taylor and Jan and Vic Hiebert; grandchildren, Joel Rye (Leesa), Morrie Elfenbein (Keith), Keri Huver (DJ), Kyle Hiebert (Brooke) and Kelly Ferguson
(Daniel). Pat was also blessed with
great-grandchildren, Kaylynn, Talia, Chayse, Brody, Jace, Tyson, Emmersyn, Julianna and Jack. She was also looking forward to
meeting Kelly and Daniel's newest bundle in June.
Pat was predeceased by her beloved
husband Jim in 1998 and spent the last 22 years missing him. In 2018, she lost her only son Bob far too soon, a heartbreak she would never recover from. She was also predeceased by her grandchildren, Denny and Erin Rye, son-in-law Murray Taylor,
sister Mabel Smith, and brother Syd Piper.
Pat was a working mother when it was practically unheard of. She and dad loved to socialize and were members of the Legion, Shrine and Masons, where they made many friends. They loved to dance and were often the only ones on the dance floor doing the Schottische (mainly because dad was the only man who knew the steps!) Pat was also very dedicated to St. Alban's Anglican Church where she devoted endless hours
volunteering for those in need.
The last years were a struggle for Pat, but she faced her challenges with dignity and
determination and refused to give up. Thank you is not enough to say to the staff at
Pembina Place, who devotedly cared for her for 18 years. Their true affection for her was evidenced by their tearful visits as she neared the end of her life. Mom held the
distinction of being the longest residing client at Pembina Place and she was known by all for her spunk and independence. "She could do it herself!"
While we will miss her, we take comfort that she is at peace and released from the constraints of the wheelchair she hated so much. Enjoy paradise mom and never stop dancing!
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the
Manitoba Lung Association would be
appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I’ve been thinking about Pembina Place during this difficult time in the world so I went looking through obituaries. My mom, Verna Hiebert, was a neighbour in 312 for a bit over two years. It is nearing the one year anniversary of my own mom’s passing and I have to say that your mom was a terrific woman! As my mother declined, Pat helped her in any way she could. When I came from Kenora to sit with my mom or feed her, Pat often gave me a ‘report’ on her eating habits for the day. Pat welcomed my mom when she was new to Pembina Place and I enjoyed visiting with her whenever I was in the home. It was a warm and friendly place. Staff and residents made it so. Pat will be missed by many. - Posted by: Darlene Hiebert (Friend) on: Apr 15, 2020

  • So very sorry to hear of Pat's passing. She was a lovely, kind and gracious woman. I did enjoy any visits that I had with her. She was a wonderful friend to my mother, Margaret Snelgrove, who also resided at Pembina Place. They spent many hours chatting together and that certainly helped to pass their long days and it did make their days much more enjoyable. My many thanks to Pat being such a good friend to my mom. - Posted by: Margaret Mark (Friend) on: Mar 01, 2020

  • I remember Pat as a faithful member of St. Alban's when I served as Rector. May she now rest in the peace of the Lord she served so well and may her family know God's comfort and love as they mourn her death. - Posted by: Jim Njegovan (Past Rector of St. Alban's) on: Feb 29, 2020

  • When you grow up in a 50's neighbourhood everyone is your parent. The Rye's were very close to my parents and we did many things together in small groups. Nana Piper lost her rings, probably down the drain, dad was called, brought his tools and grandma Piper's rings were found, not in the drain, haha. I was treated to Legion Teas where I was able to find Christmas gifts for my parents with the pennies I had. When Pat was in the HSC I went to visit as she was still important to me. Jan and I remain friends and I am sure Pat was thrilled with the Grandparents Jan and Vic became. Amazing women who will surely be missed by many. Love to all of her family, Barb - Posted by: clarke (friend, neighbourhood) on: Feb 29, 2020
