ANNE GERALDINE EDGE
(nee HOWELKO)
Anne was born in Matlock, Manitoba. She frequently recalled memories of growing up on the farm where she and her siblings would spend their summer days harvesting the garden and picking berries to sell to the cottagers along the lake. She completed Grade 12 and Normal School in Winnipeg, where one of her proudest moments was being told that she was a natural teacher. Her teaching career took her to Tanner and then Gilbert Plains, where she would meet her future husband William "Bill" Edge. Having left teaching, she moved into office positions at Bell Telephone and Great West Life. After she and Bill were married, she took on the full-time role of raising their four sons. Over her lifetime, her many talents and interests included swimming, skating, dancing, roller skating, bowling, curling, church choirs, sewing, knitting, crocheting, Swedish weaving, Yoga and Tai Chi. All of these activities were interspersed with summers of camping with her family and friends. As their children grew up, got married and had children of their own, Anne and Bill spent time travelling to see their expanding family, stretching from Burtonsville, Maryland to Whitehorse, Yukon. After Bill passed away in 2017, Anne moved to the Wellington Retirement Residence, where she enjoyed reconnecting with old acquaintances with whom she had met in years gone by, meeting new friends, sharing book recommendations, and hosting visits with her family.
Anne will be greatly missed by her sons, Bill (Wenda), Doug (Carol), Rob (Stephen) Dunbar-Edge and Tom (Lori Anderson); grandchildren, Debra (Jordan) Hiebert, Cara (Scott) Bartz-Edge, Andrew (Rhéanne) Edge, Robyn Edge, Madisen and Mercedes Bacon-Traplin, Kelsey and Ian Edge; great-grandchildren, Emily, Aiden and Matthew Hiebert, Charlotte and Madeline Bartz-Edge, Cabrel and Cécilia Edge.
A private family interment will be held in Chapel Lawn Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a reception on Friday, February 28, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. in Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg to meet with the family and share memories.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank both the staff at The Wellington for their kindness and care shown to Anne over her two-plus years there, as well as the doctors, nurses and health care aides on Ward 4 North at the Victoria General Hospital for the excellent care, compassion and support they showed during Anne's short stay there.
