DR. RICHARD WILLIAM MITCHELL

Dr. Richard William Mitchell died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on February 6, 2020, at the age of 70.
Richard is survived by his children, Amy and Aaron (Ildi Martonffy); his sister, Allyson (Garry) Antonyshyn, and their family; his grandchildren, Makeda and Joon; and his former spouse, Karen Young, with whom he remained close.
He was born on January 19, 1950, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to William and Lily. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba in 1970, and went on to complete his Ph.D. in Physiology. He married Karen (Funk), with whom he went on to raise their two children. His career took the family to the Chicago, Illinois area. He continued to work in the Midwest of the United States, before he retired and moved back to Winnipeg in 2015.
Richard always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed, be it building decks or donating blood. He treasured his many lifelong friendships, many of which he continued to grow during frequent fishing trips. He cared deeply about his loved ones, and will be remembered as an incredibly patient "Grampy."
A memorial service will be held on May 2, 2020, at 2:00 p.m., at Glen Eden Funeral Home, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. All are welcome to attend, share memories, and celebrate his life.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I am deeply, deeply saddened to know about Richard's death. Even more that it came to my attention only more than three years (!) after. I hope not to rekindle any pain... I first met with Richard during my fellowship years at the University of Chicago (96-98) where he held a position of researcher. Welcoming, friendly and willing to share the company of the fellows in those years. I was probably very insecure, mainly due to my poor comunication. But it did not bother Richard at all. Funny things came from this, and a wonderful memmory of Richard as an incredible nice guy. One day, we were having a coffee and out of the blue Richard asked me whether there were any beers (yes, the drinkable...) in Brasil (my birthplace). As I did not get it, I said "noo... there are no BEARS in Brasil... but there is this strange animal with a tail like a flag... and start depicting him the anteater..." Richard bent at Andrew Halayko, our beloved other friend, and came with "What the hell is he talking about?!?!" Andy almost drowned in laughter. What a good start for a friendship! There were other short meetings - most unfortunate these were short and so sparse... All of them full of friendship, comradery and smart comments that just ease everything that could be tough. I respectfully share my heartfelt sadness at learning so belatedly of his passing, but more importantly, I also leave a positive record of the pleasant and joyful memories fostered by my very dear friend Richard Mitchell. • I was saddened to read of Richard’s death. We shared a lot of good times in the old student council room in the basement of the chemistry building. A small highlight of my life was his acknowledgement that I had finally played a hand of bridge without screwing up. - Posted by: Gordon Shaw (Friend from the past.) on: Mar 28, 2020
