FRANZ (FRANK) HANZMANN
May 12, 1925 - March 14, 2020

On Saturday, March 14, Franz Hanzmann passed away at St. Boniface Hospital with his wife, brother and two nieces by his side.
Born in Austria, Franz is predeceased by his parents, Franz and Maria and three siblings, Karl, Peter and Josefa. In addition to his wife of 69 years, Gisela (Baumann); Franz is survived by a son Franz A. Hanzmann of Edmonton; daughter Ruth DiMeglio (John) of Rhode Island; granddaughter Ellen Aurelio (Michael) of Massachusetts; a sister Maria Binter of Austria; three brothers, Hans and Blasius of Austria and Hubert of Winnipeg. Franz leaves many nieces and nephews in Austria, Winnipeg, California and Arizona.
In 1957, Franz and his young family emigrated by ship and rail to their new home in Winnipeg, joining brothers, Peter, Hubert and their families. Teaching himself English, Franz worked for 30 years as a Store Clerk and Warehouse Foreman at the Manitoba Text Book Bureau. Fiercely independent and proud to become a citizen of Canada, he was a hardworking man with simple tastes and a wonderful smile. Franz loved his morning bowl of coffee with lots of sugar, German sausages, bread, pastries, chocolates and all meals prepared by his wife. He was a man of deep faith, inner strength and few words. Never losing his love for the music and mountains of Austria, he enjoyed waltzing with his wife and going for long walks. One of his greatest achievements and joys in life was the homey brown cottage he and his wife built off the shores of Lake Winnipeg. Family and friends gathered often at the cottage, and surrounded by nature and quiet, it reminded him of being in Austria. At peace now, Franz will be missed.
Due to existing coronavirus concerns, the burial was private and a memorial gathering will be held at a future date. The family extends its sincere gratitude to all members of the Donwood Manor Personal Care Home for their attentive and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to Donwood Manor are appreciated and may be made in his memory, either online to the Donwood Manor Foundation, or by calling the Donwood Manor Business Office at (204) 668-4410.
