GEORGE VINIE LOWE
December 1, 1926 - March 21, 2020

George Lowe, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care wing of Riverview Health Centre on Saturday, March 21.
He will be forever missed, always loved and leaves to mourn his wife Maureen (James) of 66 years; daughter Sharon (Gord); sons, Ken (Maureen) and Craig; grandchildren, Trent, Lee, Michael, Danielle, Chris; and an impressive number of nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, George and Annie Lowe; siblings, Bob (Olive) Lowe, Dorothy (Ab) Todd, twin sister Georgina (Bill) Stewart and Lorne (Joanne) Lowe. Dad was the last survivor of his immediate family, but always made time to keep in touch with his nieces and nephews.
Dad was a lifelong Manitoban, born in Winnipeg and raised in Gladstone, later moving to Winnipeg where he and mum met at Sparling United Church through the Young People's Group. Mum and Dad were married in 1953 and lived in Fort Garry on Buxton Road where they raised their family of three children.
George worked in the insurance business making his career as a Risk Manager with Cargill Grain, where he developed many life lasting friendships. He retired in 1991 at age 65, spending his winters with Mum in Apache Junction, Arizona for many years.
Throughout his life, Dad enjoyed being involved in activities. He was a member of the Fort Garry United Church, belonged to a mixed bridge club, and loved golfing and curling. In 1988, he and his curling rink went on to win the Provincial Masters Championship in the Manitoba Seniors League and represented the province in the Canadian Finals that year in Trail, BC. Over the years, he developed countless numbers of close friendships.
George loved spending time at the family cottage at L2M. He liked nothing more than to entertain family and friends, pick blueberries, fish and spend time as the "Captain" on his pontoon boat, and in the evenings barbeque over happy hour, which was a tradition at the lake. Family lore is full of stories about "The Lake" and the happy memories made there.
Our Dad (George) was a kind and generous man and we who knew him, are infinitely better off for having had him in our lives. Though we mourn his passing, we are thankful for his time here and for his love which touched us all. May you rest in peace Dad (George).
A Celebration of Life will be postponed to a future date.
Special thanks to the Palliative Care Ward 3E at Riverview Health Centre for all the wonderful care and comfort dad received during his time there.

  • George and Maureen were a couple that everyone loved! They were kind, generous, and totally devoted to one another. All I can add to my condolences to the family is that your father, George, was one of the finest men I have ever met. - Posted by: Katherine Sullivan (friend) on: Apr 01, 2020

  • The Swarbrick and Andersson family have so many lovely memories of George. From cottage get togethers to Happy hour in Arizona. George and Maureen were life long friends of our parents, Bob and Betty Swarbrick. A shared love of fun included many wonderful trips, golf games, bridge and picnics in the park. George recorded some very memorable moments with his trusty reel to reel movie projector which will be enjoyed and shared for years to come. We never saw George without a smile on his face. He was truly a lovely man and will be missed by many. - Posted by: Barb and Roland Andersson (Friend ) on: Mar 30, 2020

Always a friendly wave or hello from George, over the fence during our spring cleanups and summer yard work. He would always catch up and ask how All my family was doing. Very caring! And let me say-with our yards- we had a tough act follow being neighbours with George. His lawn and gardens were very well groomed. Again-Such a Great Man!!!!! • I met George many years ago when I first joined The Heather Senior Men's Golf Club. I was new to the game and he took me under his wing when I joined his foursome at Kildnan. I enjoyed his sincere friendship over the years until he found he could not handle the game any more. Our encounters after that were at The Pops Concerts where my Wife Diane and I always looked forward to meeting up with George and Moureen making the evening complete. That ended for us when my wife was too ill to continue that enjoyment. George was an exceptional gentleman and I will arrange for him to be honoured as a fallen member at our annual golf wind up this coming September. - Posted by: Ron Chatfield (Golfing Friend) on: Mar 28, 2020
