THERESA (TERRY) MATHAE
(nee RINGHOFER)
July 22, 1930 - March 23, 2020

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Theresa (Terry) Mathae at the age of 89 years on March 23, 2020.
Terry will be missed by her husband of 62 years, Emil; her two sons, Derrick and Brian (Jason); grandchildren, Brett (Rebecca), Courtney (Brad), Amanda (Ty); her sister Annerl in Austria; along many other relatives in Canada and Austria.
She was predeceased by her mother Theresa Ringhofer and father Alois Ringhofer; sister Mitzi Ringhofer; daughter-in-law Kathy Mathae; cousin George Pernsteiner and best friend Rita Proksch.
Terry immigrated to Canada from Austria in 1952 to visit her aunt and uncle who already resided in Winnipeg. She met Emil almost immediately upon his immigration from Austria in 1953. Friends picked Emil up from the train station and after lunch took him to the Eaton's Department Store, where Terry was selling ice cream. It was love at first sight and they were wed on August 17, 1957, on Emil's 29th birthday.
Terry had several jobs while she took Comptometer courses at night. Upon completion of the course, she was employed at The Hudson's Bay Company in the payroll department with best friend Rita. She also worked for many years at Intercity Gas (ICG Propane) until her retirement.
Terry and Emil enjoyed many trips to Austria, Hawaii, cruises and trips to British Columbia to visit Brian. They enjoyed both summers and winters at their cottage in Spruce Sands. They met many lifelong friends there including Darrel and Margaret Fierheller, the parents of her daughter-in-law Kathy.
In her retirement, Terry enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren and volunteering at the Kildonan Personal Care Home.
Terry recently struggled with the onset of Dementia, but was under the wonderful care of Dr. Lage, kind homecare workers and a dedicated medical staff at Health Science Centre. The family would like to thank all her caregivers for their compassionate care and genuine concern for her wellbeing.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Terry's name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

  • I am sorry to hear of Terry's passing. I worked with Terry for years at ICG and she was a wonderful lady. Always very proud to share stories of Emil and the boys. I'm sure she will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Lauri Romaniuk (Past co-worker) on: Mar 29, 2020
