NETTIE PAULINE KOWBEL
Nettie was the mother of Louise (Ken) Sawchuk, Kathryn, Bruce (Scott MacGregor), Brian and Donna; proud grandmother and great-grandmother of 18. Predeceased by Henry, her husband of 63 years; her parents, Frank and Stella Baran; her brother, Walter; sister-in-law, Irene; and daughter-in-law, Karen Kowbel. She will be remembered by brother-in-law, Bob; nieces, nephews and many friends.
In 1930, Nettie and her parents immigrated from Jaroslaw, Poland to start a new life in Canada on a farm in West St. Paul. A lifelong learner, she instilled this love of knowledge in others, first as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Stonewall, then as a mother with her children. She was an avid reader and enjoyed participating in book clubs and her spiritual study group. Her creativity was expressed through her artwork, knitting, and sewing. Her love of family was regularly celebrated with her amazing home cooked meals.
Together, Nettie and Henry built a successful business, Jameswood Service. They were amongst the founding members of St. Paul the Apostle Church. The family cottage at Bird Lake was their paradise-on-earth. They enjoyed travels to Europe, the Caribbean, and points throughout Canada and US, and were active subscribers to Winnipeg's symphony and theatre scene. Nettie's independent lifestyle kept her active and engaged by attending mass, exercise class and her many seniors groups. She was loved and respected for the grace and humility of her genuine spirit.
A private family service is planned at St. Paul the Apostle Church. Together we will gather to celebrate Nettie's life and legacy at a later date.

Nettie was a good friend to my mother, Marie, for 60+ years, since the earliest days of St. Paul the Apostle parish. Marie called me this morning to share this sad news and we reminisced together about the many happy times she and Don spent with Nettie and Henry. I also recall Nettie's sewing skills in the era of "stretch & sew" fabric (late 60s, I think) when she used her talents to make me several t-shirts, shorts and even a bathing suit. She had her work cut out for her, as I believe I was not only "hard to fit" but possibly a tough client. We extend our sincere condolences to the entire family.
