ELIZABETH (BETTY) LESYK
(STEELE) (ANDERSON)
Betty was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 29, 1936. Being a leap year baby, she joked that she would always be young, turning only 21 years of age in 2020.
She was the youngest of three children, and was predeceased by her parents, James and Margaret Anderson, and brother, James.
Betty is survived by sister, Flora Laing and family; sons, Jim (Alison) Steele, Derek (Karla) Steele, Brian Steele; stepchildren, Maureen (Rob) Drummond, Glendon Lesyk; grandchildren, Ryan Steele (Candice Cronin), Jodi Steele (Derek Turland), Brittany (Todd) Demers, Talia Steele (Sam), Tanner Steele, Alix Lanyon-Taylor, Sarah Lesyk, Jason Lesyk; and great-granddaughter Charli Turland. Also brothers-in-law, Joe (Carol) Steele, John Steele, Randy (Virginia) Lesyk, Ray (Brenda) Lesyk, Larry (Sharon) Lesyk, and many relatives in Canada, Scotland and USA.
In 1955 Betty married James Hart Steele, and together they had three sons. Jim and Derek were born in Scotland, with Brian arriving after they immigrated to Canada in 1965. Betty was widowed in 1974 when Jimmy died of cancer. Being a strong, independent person, she raised three boys on her own. At that time, she was employed by the City of Winnipeg, where she worked for 27 years. Betty met Morris (Moe) Lesyk several years later, and they were married on April 12, 1980, when she became a loving stepmom to Maureen and Glendon. Family was always very important to her.
Betty and Moe had 44 wonderful years together, enjoying many varied interests, and spending leisurely summers at their Balsam Bay cabin, Petersfield or Cherry Hill retreats. They also loved to travel, and made numerous trips to Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, Las Vegas, in addition to many ocean cruises. Upon retirement, they enjoyed getting away from Manitoba's cold winters, escaping to Palm Springs, CA, or British Columbia.
Betty was warm, loving and kind, was instantly likable, and made friends everywhere. She was a tiny woman with a huge smile, and great sense of humour. Cute, strong, short and sassy, her feistiness stayed with her until the end. "Wee Betty" retained her strong Scottish accent, and the family is left with some great sayings that will keep her memory alive forever. In her deep voice she would say, "Better a wee bit o' something than a big bit o' nothing".
The family would like to thank the staff at Park Manor Personal Care Home for their excellent care of Betty.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Culture Club c/o Park Manor Care, 301 Redonda St., Winnipeg, MB R2C 1L7.
A celebration of Betty's life will take place at a later date due to the Coronavirus crisis. Cremation has taken place.
The world may change from year to year

We'll (residents and staff) be missing Betty--a wonderful person with a wonderful smile who always loved to participate in our spiritual care programs. I still remember how happy she was talking, via online, to her sister from Scotland and gladly introducing her to me. It will be my honor to officiate her Celebration of Life tomorrow (April 28) for her fellow residents at Park Manor Care. If not for the pandemic, I wish the family could come also. - Posted by: Alan Delotavo (Spiritual Care Provider) on: Apr 27, 2020
