DENNIS HUGH RINGSTROM

Born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, January 9, 1933, to John and Emma (Wiberg) Ringstrom, Dennis - a pilot, fisherman, teacher and lawyer - was a lifelong learner whose career with Fillmore & Riley in Winnipeg spanned over 40 years.
He used to joke that law was a means to buy better fishing rods, but he was fortunate to find a career that he excelled at and enjoyed. He was well respected for his keen intelligence and forthright honesty.
Dennis could pull fish out of the lake when no one else was getting a bite and could identify the model of an airplane just by the sound of the engine. A highlight of his life was flying from New York to Paris with his brother-in-law, Tom Goodhand, in Tom's single-engine plane. His childhood in Punnichy was idyllic and, in later years, he was known to touch down at his aunt's home in Weyburn just to take her for a spin. He never forgot who he was or where he was from.
He earned a B.A. from Brandon College, after which he traveled to Europe for an extended period and taught school in England. While teaching in London, he met his future wife, Mary Lewis, a nurse. They relocated to Winnipeg where he studied law at the University of Manitoba.
Predeceased by his daughter Elin Ringstrom; parents, John and Emma; siblings, Loreen Goodhand and Morley Ringstrom; and in-laws Anne and Douglas Clark, David Lewis, John Lewis and Florence and Kingsley Lewis.
Following several months of declining health, Dennis passed away March 30. He leaves behind his wife Mary; son Carl; daughter Anna (Jim Siemens); grandchildren, Peter, Teilo, Mette and Lucca Siemens; siblings, Ollie Sinclair and Doug Ringstrom; brother-in-law Tom Goodhand; sister-in-law Diana Ringstrom; numerous nieces and nephews; cousins; long-time friends; his Lake of the Woods neighbours; and the lunch time regulars at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre.
A smart man with an inquiring mind, Dennis was a witty and natural storyteller. He will be missed.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Mary & Carl, So sorry for the void that Dennis leaves behind. I hope all the happy memories bring some comfort in the following months. Big Hugs, Sally Brodrick - Posted by: Sally Brodrick (friend) on: Apr 21, 2020

  • Condolences to Mary, Carl and family. Dennis and I had several conversations out in the lane during many seasons; and with Mary out walking, as well, talking about our pets, etc. He would often give us pickerel cheeks after I had snow blowed their driveway after a heavy snowfall. RIP - Posted by: Denis & Barbara Petrowski (Neighbours) on: Apr 13, 2020

  • Saddened to learn of Dennis's passing. I liked him a lot, respected and so appreciated his representation and knowledge on many occasions. His personality was inviting and magnetic. Always a joy to be in his company. I have many fond memories of time shared. So grateful our paths crossed. My heartfelt condolences to family and friends. - Posted by: Garry Harland (Friend) on: Apr 11, 2020

  • My uncle Dennis encouraged me to buy my rural property in Manitoba, accompanied me looking at land, bought me my first lawn mower, traded a shot gun for the wood stove. Offered me respite at his cottage. He is missed. Kirsten, niece - Posted by: Kirsten Ringstrom (Niece) on: Apr 11, 2020

  • We always remember sharing a drink and listening to Dennis tell me stories of the old days, especially the one where a relative from Saskatchewan captured a number of German soldiers during World War II. Will miss him! - Posted by: Robin Leslie (Friend) on: Apr 11, 2020

  • I was sorry to learn of Dennis' passing. I first met Dennis when he was a young lawyer with Fillmore & Riley. I utilized that firm considerably and got to know Dennis quite well, and was one of the lawyers that I used in that firm. I respected Dennis highly and enjoyed working with him. I thought his obituary described him to a "T". My sincere condolences go to his family. I know that he will be missed. • Dennis and Dr, Goodhand stopped at our place in Frobisher Bay NWT when they were on the New York to Paris race. They had a meal with us and I had their oxygen bottles filled at the hospital so they could fly above the mountains on the circle route to Scotland. They stopped on there way home as well and related their adventures. I especially remember Dennis relating his trouble buying gas in Scotland for the airplane as they would not take any credit cards or Canadian money. - Posted by: Christopher Bell (Friend) on: Apr 11, 2020
