GERTRAUD (GERTRUDE) EVA MARIA LUEDTKE
(nee HILDEBRAND)

We sadly announce the passing of Gertraud Luedtke on the eve of April 7, 2020, at the Grace Hospital.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Paul Luedtke, of 50 years in 1998; her brother Ulrich Hildebrand; sister Ursula Zapp (Erwin); and sister Christa Sachse (Heinz). She is survived by her son Wolfgang (Phyllis); granddaughter Alaina Burgoyne (Michael), and great-grandsons Aden and Mason; grandson Matthew (Teryl), and great-granddaugther Elise; granddaughter Jennifer Arnold (Victor Vidovic); and granddaughter Nancy Arnold (Dylan Hygaard); as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gertraud was born in Berlin, Neukolln, Germany November 14, 1923, to Paul and Hedwig Hildebrand. She married Paul Luedtke in Germany in 1948. Their only son, Wolfgang, was born in 1949. By 1953, the family immigrated to Canada, settling at first in Chilliwack, B.C. That first winter proved to be quite severe with many storms, and helped with their decision to leave and move east to Winnipeg, where she and her family resided until her passing.
Since her husband Paul was an avid fisherman, Gertraud took up fishing and they travelled to Whiteshell and Lac du Bonnet areas. She also enjoyed keeping busy with her hobbies of gardening, knitting, reading books, and playing cards with friends. She also loved to travel. For many years, she and her husband travelled in the winter to the Bahamas, where they were housesitting for their cousin. As time passed, they decided that they wanted to enjoy more time with the grandchildren, watching them grow up. By 1996, they moved into the Courts of St. James, which meant less yardwork. Many years after Paul's passing, Gertraud decided to move into the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, where she made a lot of new friends. She also loved sharing lively stories of her childhood with her granddaughters and grandson, as well as spending memorable time with her three precious great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the home care staff who took such good care of Mom, Metropolitan Kiwanis personnel for all their help during her stay there, the Grace Hospital, Dr. George and the staff on Ward 204-1 for the compassionate care she received. Gertraud's warmth and caring ways will be sorely missed.

R.I.P. Mom…we love you.

A private family interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, CancerCare, or a charity of your choice.
