MICHAEL CHIC
Michael is survived by his wife of 32 years, Laraine, great-aunt Amelia Ciastko, sister Teenie Myketa; nieces, Pat Myketa and Marlene Myketa-Girard (Alain); nephews, Aaron and Mike Safioles (Kaely), as well as extended family members in Winnipeg. Michael is also survived by his sister-in-law Pat and husband Ricky Cameron and family in Scotland, sister-in-law Fiona Allan in California, as well as many friends and former co-workers in Winnipeg and Calgary.
He was predeceased by his parents, William and Mary; brother Tony and sister Adeline; mother-in-law Sadie Reid; brothers-in-law, Nick Myketa, Moe Zipman, Ian Allan, as well as numerous aunts and uncles. Michael was particularly saddened by the passing of his uncle Pete Wish (and wife Bea), with whom he had a close bond. He is now reunited with his beloved Fritzi, waiting at the door to greet him.
Mike was born in Meleb, Manitoba, on April 16, 1941, the youngest of four children. He left the farm at an early age, quickly developing a keen interest in cars, and interest that defined most of his working career. Michael was very eager to try new things, which led to his development of many talents and careers over his life. He was proud of his mechanic abilities, held a pilot's license for many years, a real estate license and was involved in small business for most of his working life. He spent 30 plus years in Calgary, returning to Winnipeg in 2007 to be closer to family. Michael spent the majority of his life working in the automotive field, and in retirement, enjoyed nothing more than puttering in his garage and planning the next project. Michael was a master carpenter, renovating homes in both Calgary and Winnipeg, with a keen eye for detail, evident in all of his projects - whether it be making furniture, building structures or renovating houses.
Michael loved his family and was a consummate host, ensuring everyone felt welcomed, was well fed and "watered". His prowess with the barbecue was unsurpassed, with his barbecued ribs and turkey being legendary! Michael was always ready to lend a helping hand to family and neighbours, and would be there to help at a moment's notice. He had a keen sense of humour, and enjoyed countless hours with family and friends, reminiscing and telling stories. We will miss him dearly.
We would like to thank Dr. Yasmin Nadeem and Dr. Sony Canteenwala for their expert care and compassion over the past several years. As well, a huge thank you to the Winnipeg Paramedic Service and first responders for their care and compassion in assisting Michael.
Private family interment of Michael's ashes will be held at a later date at Glen Eden Cemetery.
