PAUL JAMES JONSSON WESTDAL
1974 - 2020
He was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, cousin, and friend.
Paul was born in Pinawa, Manitoba on November 2, 1974, to John and Heather Westdal, joining big sister, Tanis, and big brother, David, and completing the family of five. Paul loved growing up in Pinawa and spending time with his family going on road trips, and participating in outdoor pastimes such as sailing, canoeing, and swimming off the Prescott dock. He loved to hang out with his friends, playing sports, playing music, or just spending time outdoors. As Paul was an extremely loyal, generous, and hilarious friend, he maintained a close bond with many of his childhood friends throughout his life.
Following his high school graduation in 1992, Paul moved into Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba. His sense of adventure was strong however, and that drew him to move to other areas of Canada to live, including Lake Louise, Alberta, and Dawson City, Yukon.
It was while Paul was in Manitoba, in between stints of working in Lake Louise, that he met Jennifer. Paul returned to Lake Louise to work, but came back to Manitoba in December, 1997, and soon he and Jen started dating and fell in love. It was during this time that Paul returned to the University of Manitoba, and completed his university education in October, 1998.
Paul continued to look for ways to experience adventures, so he took a position teaching English in Seoul, South Korea in 1999. Paul enjoyed his time in Korea, and the experience of day-to-day living in a different culture and environment. Jen joined in the adventure in January, 2000, embarking on a once-in-a lifetime trip with Paul through parts of Asia and Europe. One of the highlights... their engagement in Cappadocia Region of Turkey.
After returning to Winnipeg from travelling, Paul began working at Investors Group in the fall of 2000. In 2005, Paul moved to the Canadian Wheat Board, working in the Treasury Department through the restructuring period to G3 Canada. After a successful career at G3 Canada, he rejoined IGM in 2016, in the Enterprise Risk Management Group, as Senior Manager Financial Risk Management. As his days in Pinawa, Paul developed strong friendships with his work colleagues. Many of them carried on beyond work, to be friends Paul still has to this day.
Paul and Jen married in 2001, and were thrilled to welcome their son, Robertson, in 2005, followed closely by their daughter, Veronica, in 2007. Paul was a devoted family man who was always open to new experiences. He enjoyed spending time with the kids, and being involved in their activities. He was incredibly proud of Robertson and Veronica, and always encouraged them to take on opportunities in life. He introduced them to his love of music, camping, sports, and shared his curiosity about the world. Paul still had an incredible love of travel, adventure, and exploring, an example being the family camping between Christmas and New Year's when the outside temperatures at night were -30C. One of Paul's favourite things to do on a weekend was get in the van and drive to a new park or trail, to check it out with the family. Paul's plan for this year's summer vacation was to take his family on a camping trip to Yellowknife.
Paul was predeceased by his father, John, in 2009; and brother, David, in 2017. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Jennifer Sheridan Westdal; children, Robertson and Veronica; mother, Heather Westdal (Robert Revak); sister, Tanis Westdal (Neil Dempsey), C.J. and Charlotte; sister-in-law, Sarah Westdal-Doelger (Christian Doelger), Evelyn, John and Luise; amma, Evelyn Westdal, mother-in-law, Marilyn Sheridan (Ken Sarvis); as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and countless friends.
Due to current gathering restrictions, a celebration of Paul's life will be held at a later date.
Paul's family would like to thank the staff of the Bergen Cardiac Care Clinic, I.H. Asper Institute, Dr. Yamashita, Dr. Tam, and all the others who were involved in Paul's care over the past few years.
In lieu of flowers, a fund has been set up to support the post-secondary education of his children. A donation can be made under the name of RobertsonVeronicaTrust@gmail.com through e-transfer, or cheques sent to 19 Trailside Crescent, Winnipeg, MB R3Y 0N1.
To say that Paul will be missed is a huge understatement. Those who knew him will always remember and appreciate his subtle charm, sharp wit, and chill attitude. Everyone who knew Paul knows how lucky they were to have him in their lives.

I had the good fortune of sitting directly across from Paul for multiple years at CWB. It was a privilege to work alongside him (in front of him, I guess) and also inevitably learn more and more about what a great guy he was every day. Extremely warm human being with a good sense of humour. I'll remember him fondly, and wish his family and close friends my condolences. - Posted by: Jeffrey Fischer (fomer colleague) on: Jun 29, 2020

Sending love from all of us here in Eastern Ontario along with saddened hearts for the loss of Paul. My memories of Paul are when we were all young and we lived closer to each other. He was a love bug as a little kid, full of smiles. As he got older, his laugh reminded me of Uncle John. He has left a beautiful, strong and adventurous family, seeds that will continue to grow and flourish. XO - Posted by: Kirstin Davidson (Cousin) on: May 02, 2020

Jen - words truly fail us. We were so sorry to hear this news. What can you say about Paul - he was a brilliant, funny, witty man who lived for you and the kids. I was very saddened and shocked to learn of Paul's passing. My deepest sympathy to Jennifer and all his family. Paul worked with my team in Treasury at Investors Group in the early 2000's. He found his passion working with foreign exchange but no task was too trivial for him to do. He was a pleasure to work with and was definitely missed when he moved on the CWB. It was a pleasant surprise to see Paul back at Investors Group a number of years later and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him then too. A bright light in the world was extinguished when he passed. He will be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Patti Cherney (former colleague) on: Apr 29, 2020

I too was shocked to learn of Paul's passing. I worked alongside Paul at IG in the early 2000's, and we kept in touch when he returned to IG later. My condolences to you Jennifer - and the kids. Paul was a smart, articulate and funny guy. I admired his knowledge of the markets and his personal commentary. We had a lot of fun together as a group of co-workers. RIP Paul - Posted by: Wes Dueck (colleague) on: Apr 28, 2020

We remember Paul has a young see lad singing in the PCF choir-he was taller than his contemporaries and you had to remind yourself he was just 11. Happy to read about his success as a man and father. Our deepest sympathy to the family with a special hug for Heather. - Posted by: Dianne and Terry Rummery (friends from Pinawa) on: Apr 28, 2020

My deepest condolences to Paul's family. Paul was a real nice guy and I always looked forward to getting together with him. He had always had a great outlook and downplayed any health challenges and setbacks he faced. I am one of his many friends in the investment industry that enjoyed his company, admired him and will miss him. - Posted by: Bob Block (Work Colleague) on: Apr 27, 2020

I worked with Paul for several years during his tenure with CWB and in that time he became a good friend. I always appreciated hearing his take on financial markets as well his ability to take a serious conversation and then quickly move it to something much more lighthearted. I am shocked to hear of his passing and offer up my sincere sympathies to his family. - Posted by: Chris Fricke (Friend / Work) on: Apr 27, 2020

Paul grew up with our son, Jeremy. They were both part of Elaine's group of Jack Rabits. He and Jeremy at about 14 were ungainly and clumsy due to their fast growth spurts which put them at a disadvantage for some of the teaching we were doing. So, instead they had a great time climbing snow hills and falling into deep drifts and then struggling to get out of them. It wasn't pretty but they had fun and when their muscles caught up to their bones, they could ski. Paul was a lovely young man and we grieve with his family. - Posted by: Oliver.
