MARY C. CAMPBELL
1923 - 2020

After a long and full life, on April 23, 2020, Mary Campbell (nee Harris) "hopped the twig", as she often called it. She delighted in such light-hearted pragmatism.
With an indelible memory and a brilliant sense of humour, poems, limericks and songs were part of her abundant and ever-present repertoire. She was a lady to be reckoned with, part of a fading generation: she entertained with elegance and misbehaved with panache.
Her most treasured times were at her cottage on Clearwater Bay, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether lighting bonfires, playing cards or serving blueberry pie, all who spent time with her there knew her passions.
Mary was sustained throughout her life by a deep and abiding faith. The church always figured prominently in her life, and benefited greatly through her active participation and leadership. Volunteering first at Crescent Fort Rouge, and then at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, she served on the Board at St. Andrew's numerous times, and participated on virtually every committee at least once. She was strongly committed to community service, especially Meals on Wheels, Riding for the Disabled, and latterly, Match International (now Equality Fund).
Mary always pursued intellectual interests. She was head-girl at Riverbend, the precursor to Balmoral Hall, and graduated from university with honours in history. In her late teens, she became an associate of the Toronto Conservatory of Music with first class honours, and 30 years later she went back and obtained her Grade 10 piano a second time. An active sportswoman, Mary sailed competitively for 30 years, rode horses from the age of 11 to 69, and delighted in travelling with friends and family.
She is survived and much beloved by her four children, Angus (Diane), Cathy (Dennis), Judy (Kim) and Mary Jo (Pat); her eight grandchildren, Robin, Colin, Wendy, Morgan, Jessica, Michael, Jamie and Mary; and her five great-grandchildren, Sina, Harper, Andrew, Thomas and Vivian.
Once the current pandemic recedes, her family invite you to join them to celebrate Mary's life at St. Andrew's United Church, followed by a reception, details to be advised.
Mary was predeceased by an infant son, Charles; and by her sisters and brother: Caroline, Joan, Dick and Julie.
Her family would especially like to thank Sandra Shaw for the wisdom and support she provided. We would also like to thank the staff at the Wellington, and also all those from community home care, who made it possible for Mary to stay in her home these past years.
If people so desire, donations can be made to Equality Fund, formerly known as Match International Women's Fund, or United Church Mission and Service Fund, or a charity of one's choice.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I have known Mary for most of my life and have very many happy memories of times spent together - not often enough but when in Winnipeg we always went to see her and always got a big welcome. Jean and I would like to say how sorry we are that she has now passed on and send our deepest sympathies to all her family and extended family. Little did we know that when my father Jack Henderson married Eileen Harris in 1948 how this would all develop into such an extended family. We send our love to you all. xx - Posted by: Johnnie and Jean Henderson, Scotland (Distant cousin) on: May 24, 2020

  • Hats off to Mary Campbell, by far my mom's coolest friend. From Bridge Club to the Wellington, they were great pals. What a life she lived - from horses to sailboats - spreading sunshine wherever she went. Big Gray hugs to all - she was such a positive person, and a joy! xo - Posted by: Cari Gray (Friend) on: May 08, 2020

  • It was always such a delight to be with Mary with her calm, engaging personality and her keen interest in the world. I visited her at Riverview, enjoyed being with her at Church on Sundays and talking about her life at Lake of the Woods. You have taught me so much Mary. Bless to all the family. - Posted by: Sonja Lundstrom (friend from St.Andrews River Heights United Church) on: May 07, 2020

  • I have such fond memories of chatting with Mary as she walked her beloved dogs around the neighbourhood. Even at a young age I could tell that she was a strong independent woman with an amazing sense of humour. May she rest in peace and her family and friends cherish all the memories. - Posted by: Marilyn (nee Harris) Alexiou (cousin) on: May 03, 2020

  • I remember fondly several chats and visits I had with Mary over the years while growing up in Winnipeg before I moved to the USA in 1985. She was always a very positive person, with a great sense of humor and a very kind, supportive soul. She was always interested in what I was doing with my life and encouraged me in my endeavors. I always had the feeling with Mary that the “glass was much more than half full”. My sincere condolences to the family. - Peter Harris - Posted by: Peter Harris (Family ) on: May 02, 2020

  • I drove Mary home from the lake one day. It was the most enjoyable two hours of conversation I have ever experienced. She had so much history of mine and other Lake of the Woods families that she shared that I wished we were driving to Brandon instead. - Posted by: Al McLaughlin (family friend) on: May 02, 2020

  • It was truly an honour and a privilege to know Mary Campbell. She was a woman who kept me on my toes and challenged me often which endeared her to me. I loved her feisty personality and her strong faith in her God. Her love for the youth of our church was evident when she had her 90th birthday, I believe it was, and invited all the youth to attend. Truly she was a gift from God our Creator and will be missed by us all. She leaves a memory and influence that will live on into eternity. Her memory and life will live on in all who had the privilege in walking with her in this life. - Posted by: Rev. Karen Lumley (Minister) on: May 02, 2020

  • So sorry to hear of this loss.... it’s truly heartbreaking. I’ve known Mary since I was a little girl at church. She was so friendly, funny and was such a trooper! She would always want to chat when I would come for lunch to see my grandma - and I looked forward to seeing her every week! I would always ask her how she was doing and she would say “good enough!” every time! I will never forget our conversations together (often about horses) these past few years at the Wellington. Rest In Peace Mary. ❤️ - Posted by: Sondra Barber (Friend) on: Apr 28, 2020

  • Aunt Mary's bright smile and infectious laugh could light up a room. She was always so kind, funny and witty. My love and prayers go out to the entire Campbell clan. With love, Sheila, Vito, Patrick & Spencer And the Harris family - Posted by: Sheila Harris Rizzuto (niece) on: Apr 26, 2020

  • I and my family are greatly saddened upon learning of Mary's death. I have been so lucky in knowing Mary and her family from the time I was a little girl and I know my mother feels the same. I was fortunate to have several lovely though brief conversations with Mary in January of this year at the Wellington as she was waiting to go into dinner, in the elevator, in the "Bistro" or just going down the hall. Mary was an amazing woman and this is reflected in her family. Mary will be missed by many. Myself, my mother Donna and my brother Arthur send our deepest condolences to all the members of Mary's family. - Posted by: Sidney (friend of family) on: Apr 25, 2020
