MARGARET PHELPS
(nee DICKINSON)
October 29, 1924 - May 5, 2020

Margaret Ellen Phelps passed away peacefully on May 5, 2020, at Golden Links Lodge in Winnipeg.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Beverley Hindle (John); son-in-law, Gerald Teichrib; and her grandchildren: Christine Gardiner, Colleen Helgason, Allyson Hindle and D'Alton Hindle (Caitlin); great-grandchildren: Leah Kirkup, Max Gardiner, Nicholas Hindle and Evelyn Hindle; as well as many nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by her husband of more than 60 years, Henry Phelps; her daughter, Ruth Teichrib; and her brother, Clifford Dickinson.
Margaret was a strong, independent woman who never wanted special treatment for herself. She enjoyed remarkable good health for most of her adult life. She was a hard worker, and loved to host dinners for family, especially her girls and their guys. Margaret enjoyed cooking and was known for her delicious lemon pies. She liked playing darts and was an enthusiastic Scrabble fan. She played golf just for fun, never making a single par.
Margaret was a good mother, despite the death of her own mother when Margaret was only five years old. She grew up in the Children's Home orphanage, and always spoke with gratitude for the care she received there as a child.
She fell in love with Henry, a handsome guy, and married him in 1945. Together they had two daughters. After the girls were teens, Margaret worked in retail sales at both Sears and Eaton's, and enjoyed friendships made there. Henry and Margaret moved to Arnes, Manitoba in 1981, where in retirement, they enjoyed many happy years playing golf, darts, and cards with family and friends.
Mum, you were strong until the end. I will miss you so.
Many, many thanks to Golden Links Lodge where Margaret received excellent care during her last years.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Margaret's life will be held at a later date when such gatherings are permitted and family members are able to travel.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in memory of Margaret to Golden Links Lodge, 2280 St. Mary's Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2N 3Z6.

Condolences may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com.

  • Even though time has passed I found Marg's obit. Marg was my right hand gal while working in the Jewellery dept, she was a calm friendly lovely lady. We worked well together she was always fixing the jewellery showcases to keep them nice. Marg gave me a crystal pin I always wear at Christmas. Marg told me she was moving to Arnes and that year my daughter went to Camp Arnes we went to visit Marg before on our way home. Very fond memories of Marg. Diane Lindberg (Chisholm). I still miss the gals who worked with us a really great group. - Posted by: Diane Lindberg (Co Worker at Eaton's Polo Park during the 70s) on: Dec 02, 2024

  • Dear Bev, I just now heard of your sweet mother's passing and offer my deepest sympathies. Ruth and I went way back to Charleswood Collegiate days, and I met your Mom on many occasions. When we were at Ruth's at Christmastimes, we all shared many laughs and my life always felt richer for knowing both your parents. They will live on in my heart. I hope you and John are well. Take care. - Posted by: Sharon Moorhead (Friend) on: Jun 29, 2020

  • Because, sorry I’m late at posting this but was sad to hear the loss of your mother. She was a wonderful person, since meeting her in my Sunday school days and on up into adulthood, she always welcomed me into her home. I hope you will be strong with her passing and know all of your past friends will grieve with you. Bob. - Posted by: Bob zimmerman (Friend ) on: May 28, 2020
