ROBERT WILLIAM MACNEIL

Robbie died, surrounded by his family, on May 8, 2020, in Winnipeg. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 47 years, Mardi; his two children, Kevin (Cheryl), Kristi (Patrick); and beloved granddaughter, Ainsley.
Rob will also be remembered by his brother-in-law, Jim, his nephews, Matt and Mike, and niece Marla. He was predeceased by his sister Martha. A special thank you to the countless friends who loved him as much as we did.
Rob was born in Winnipeg in 1947, to Bob and Margaret, and spent his childhood in St. James. Rob attended the University of Winnipeg, and graduated from the University of Manitoba Law School in 1974. Rob had a diverse career in law, and the public service, but his true passion was family and the cottage at Lac du Bonnet.
Rob will be remembered for his incredible generosity and charismatic sense of humour. He could often be found hosting friends and family at the lake, including barbecuing on July 1, competing in the annual sailing regatta, croquet tournaments, steambath runs, lawn dart tournaments, and the never ending late night dinners.
Rob had a zest for life, and rarely missed an opportunity for fun. This included visits to the hunting lodge, fishing trips, cooking Christmas dinner, Chicago of the North trips, travelling with Mardi on many of her flights, golf trips and Tuesday night men's league at St. Charles, and dinners with special friends, just to name a few. Rob loved good food, good drinks, and good times.
Above all else, Rob loved being a father, and his family was his joy. In his last days he was surrounded by family, sipping on a manhattan, as he remarked, "I'm just so happy."
Service to take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lac du Bonnet Lions Club.

Until next time, bucko.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • Hello Mardi, I want to offer my condolences on the loss of your husband. I am Robbie's cousin Mary, daughter of Betty Kotchapaw. I have just now heard of his passing. I have a happy memory of Robbie attending my pre-wedding dinner in Calgary. He arrived happy and joking around and it was a pleasure to have him at our gathering. Best wishes to you and your children. Mary Ekvall - Posted by: Mary Ekvall (cousin) on: Jan 31, 2022

  • Character is timeless and Robbie, your strong character will only be shadowed by your kindness. My condolences Mardi, Kevin and Kristie. Thinking of you all with the fondest of memories. - Posted by: Neil Brown (Family Friend) on: May 31, 2020

  • I didn't know Rob but just looking at his picture he looks like a fun loving guy. Unfortunately, the pandemic prevents your friends and family to be with you and share your grief with at least a "real" hug. My deepest sympathies to you and your family. • Dear Mardi, Kevin and Kristie I have known your husband/dad a long time....since the days when I used to go to Silver Heights Medical to see Dr. Fred Gould. If Fred was away I saw Rob's dad a few times. He was part of that medical group. Sometimes Rob was in the clinic waiting on his dad, and that was when I first met Rob. Later in life our boys attended school together and our two families lived a block away from each other for many years as the kids grew up. Now Mardi and I have connected again with the many friends we both have in common and the fun of our new sport we play called pickleball. Mardi and family, both Dean and I and our family are so sorry for your loss. I know Rob was struggling near the end and we hope he has found peace. Cherish his memories and know that your friends are near for support in this difficult time. - Posted by: Sandy and Dean Magnus (Friend) on: May 20, 2020

  • So sorry to hear of Rob's passing. Mardi and family, I know you had many wonderful fun family days together and you will miss him. I worked with Rob for 5 years and always enjoyed the wonderful sense of humour he had. I enjoyed his golf club weekly scores, his tales of weekend fun at the cottage and the sharing of recipes and cooking experiences. We had the opportunity to visit your cottage and Rob didn't disappoint. Tons of drinks, great food and lots of laughs were had. - Posted by: Margaret Day (coworker) on: May 19, 2020
