EVELYN WRAY

Evelyn Wray passed away on May 31, 2020, in the Palliative Care Unit of the St. Boniface Hospital after a yearlong struggle with cancer.
Born in Dauphin, Manitoba, it would be hard to imagine a time when her feet didn't hit the ground running. Growing up on the family farm with her brothers and sister, she took school very seriously and went on to pursue a teaching career in Brandon. While there, not only did she drive a fancy car, form many of her lifelong friendships, she later obtained her private pilot's licence.
Evelyn expanded her horizons by going to Germany to teach at the R.C.A.F base near Baden-Baden. She travelled all throughout Europe, the Middle East and Egypt. In Germany, she met the love of her life, Harry, an Air Force pilot. Mom would definitely tell you about the fabulous times of the 1960s, her favourite decade. The 1970s brought marriage, children and a move back to Canada. She always kept busy, whether it be gardening, baking, cooking, taking classes, or working. She fully integrated our family into any community we moved to, whether it be Cold Lake, AB, Ottawa, Panama City, FL or Winnipeg.
She was compassionate, kind, fiercely determined and energetic, and it showed in every aspect of her life. After she retired, she gave back by volunteering with many organizations and events. Whether she was volunteering on the political campaign trail, Fort Whyte Alive, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, her many sporting events, and especially her beloved Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Evelyn would always be the one to strike up a conversation and be genuinely interested in you. This was her gift and those interactions, friendships and relationships truly blossomed. For now we grieve, as is the price of a lost love, but our hearts will smile again with cherished memories of the time we shared.
Evelyn is survived by her loving husband Harry; daughters, Jeanine (Stephen Madrigga), and Leanne (Kyle Goerz); beloved grandsons, Austin Madrigga, Brandon and Jordan Goerz; brother David (Zelma) Coombs; sister Irene Coombs (Phil Rosenzweig); sister-in-law Sonia Coombs; and numerous nephews and nieces, and extended family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Bert and Anne Coombs (nee Slobodzian); and her brother Ken.
Due to the challenges of Covid-19 there will be no immediate Celebration of Life ceremony and a family burial will take place in Dauphin at a later date.

  • While I never did meet Evelyn, I knew Harry in Cold Lake in the early '70's...I'm guessing Evelyn's second favorite decade. My admiration for Harry was also the admiration for the man she helped him become. Reading the text above serves as an introduction to the woman who was Harry's ideal partner. Harry's ready wit and quick smile come from a happy and well adjusted home which she created for him & their children. To Harry and family, you have my sincere condolences. Find peace in knowing that you are all a product of this wonderful woman, and so shall your children also be. - Posted by: Joel Paton (friend of Harry) on: Aug 30, 2020

  • I also knew her through the Bombers Fan Ambassadors. She was very friendly very kind very professional. Sad for your loss. - Posted by: kevin (acquaintance) on: Jun 15, 2020

  • My sincere condolences for Harry and all of Evelyn’s loved ones. I met Evelyn when I volunteered with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and FIFA Cup. She immediately struck me as a beautiful, kind, compassionate and genuinely “interested in others” person. When I was asked to arrange with a couple volunteers to drive the golf cart (a new position transporting commuters to and from their parking stalls), I immediately thought of Evelyn. Whether it was pouring rain or scorching hot, Evelyn was always there, chatting and impacting Fan Ambassadors along the way. My heart goes out to Harry, whom I also worked with for many years at Transport Canada. God bless you and your family as you mourn, yet celebrate the life of this awesome lady. - Posted by: Shawna Peterson (Volunteer with Blue Bombers) on: Jun 15, 2020

  • I knew Eve only through the Bombers Fan Ambassadors. She was the best golf cart driver ever. Sad for your loss. - Posted by: Jim (acquaintance) on: Jun 14, 2020

  • Dear Harry, I want to express my deepest heartfelt condolences to you & your family at this very sad time. I use to volunteer at Fort Whyte Alive with Evelyn. We became fast friends at the time. Evelyn was such a lovely person. I have been thinking of her a lot but for some reason we did not keep in touch. Evelyn was a wonderful Lady. I will treasure my fond memories of our friendship.
