MARGARET HELEN MURRAY-HADDAD (nee WASSELL)

Margaret passed away on June 6, 2020, at the age of 72, at Riverview Health Centre.
She leaves behind her sister Patricia Locken (Roger), her two sons, Jeff (Nicky) and Ryan (Karly), as well as two grandchildren, Jack and Madeleine. She was predeceased by her husband Brant Haddad, and parents, Jack and Winnifred Wassell.
Growing up on Sherburn Street, Margaret enjoyed baton twirling and tap dancing at Orioles Community Club. She attended Tec Voc high school where she played the French horn, wrote for the student newspaper, was editor of the yearbook and was valedictorian of her graduating class. Margaret then chose a career in the business world as a receptionist and secretary, beginning her career at Great-West Life and supplementing her income by typing for university students. She worked hard to raise her two sons, becoming an executive assistant for Genstar Building Materials, Child & Family Services and the highlight of her career being hired as the executive assistant to the Minister of Family Services and working at the legislative building. Margaret was a lobbyist to the end. She was passionate about making an impact wherever she saw a need.
As a young mother, she developed a lunch program at her sons' elementary school to help the community provide lunchtime supervision. She also mobilized the right resources to get a new gym floor at her sons' high school. After retiring, she and Brant relocated to Victoria Beach. Seeing the population of aging permanent residents in the area, she joined the Board of the East Beaches Regional Complex Inc. and was involved in establishing a mobile medical clinic that would regularly visit the area.
Margaret was socially engaged and always loved to entertain or attend an event. She and Brant made many friendships wherever they lived, finding neighbours to care for and to be cared by. Margaret became heavily involved in public policy for the Victoria Beach area, attending many public meetings and always willing to offer her opinion and support an initiative. She leaves two significant legacies to the area. She established a weekly "Country Market" to support the local community club but also to create a social opportunity that enriches the community to this day. Most recently, she along with friend, Joanne Gibson, produced an overwhelmingly successful musical called "VB the Musical", which brought together many families to share in the 100-year history of the Victoria Beach area.
Margaret loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures with her husband Brant. She also enjoyed writing and wrote several articles for the local newspaper and other publications. Most of all she loved her friends and family and instilled in her sons strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Due to the current circumstances, a private service and interment will take place in the coming week.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I learned of Margaret's passing just recently. My deepest condolences to the family. We were neighbours for many years on Somerville Avenue back in the 80's - Posted by: Gail Hill (Friend) on: Apr 24, 2023

  • Jeff, Ryan and families, I’m sorry to hear about your Mom’s passing. Reading her obituary (wonderfully written) brought back memories of a woman whose strength was evident and daunting to the young woman I was when I knew her. It would seem that she and Brant created a wonderful life together and I hope that memories made will give you and your families peace knowing she lived well, and some smiles to sustain you through this difficult time. I will raise a glass to her this Canada Day! - Posted by: Deana Hendricks (Acquaintance ) on: Jun 22, 2020

  • When Margaret saw a need or a wrong she was often first to the podium with an observation and the idea of a solution. She was tireless when it came to a cause she felt worthy. I think it baffled her when others couldn't see what she considered obvious. She was passionate about the community of Victoria Beach and the well being of her neighbors in the East Beaches. I shared her love of art, literature and history - especially ancestry. I had tremendous respect for her tenacity, her curiosity and for her generosity. It can be said about Margaret that she "did what she could" and did it with her whole heart. She loved her children more than they might have known and as a partner to Brant she remained his best friend for their entire marriage. I don't think life was ever easy but Margaret never stopped giving what was hers to give. RIP. - Posted by: Laura Tutlies (acquaintance ) on: Jun 16, 2020

  • She was a gentle, quiet person who got along with everyone. She went on to Tec Voc and I went to Daniel Mac, so we lost touch. Moving to Sidney, BC did not help. I believe my mom and her mom were friends, perhaps from St Mathews church. - Posted by: Ken Sargeant (In junior high We were in the same class ( gr 8 & 9 at General Wolfe school. • Garry and I send our deepest sympathies to Margaret’s family. We met Margaret and Brant many years ago volunteering for the Family Festival. We spent time making perogies together and fine dining at South Beach Casino. I was shocked and saddened when Margaret was diagnosed with cancer. We kept in touch over these last few months and as I talked to her two weeks before she passed, I was deeply saddened. I am sorry that she did not make that last trip to her home in VB. She and Brant are reunited and resting peacefully. God Bless our friend Margaret. - Posted by: Bonnie and Garry Grace (Beach friends) on: Jun 13, 2020

  • I knew Margaret for a very short time. She moved into the condo complex I live in and lived down the hall. Even in the short time I knew her, I was taken with her openness, intelligence and generous spirit. I was so sorry to read about her death, and offer my sympathy to her family in the loss of this lovely woman. - Posted by: Ida Reichardt ( Neighbour) on: Jun 13, 2020

  • My deepest condolences to the family. I had the opportunity to work with Margaret and with her support and guidance continue her legacy of the VB Country Market. She will be missed. - Posted by: Carol Bartmanovich (Fruend) on: Jun 13, 2020

  • So sorry to learn of the passing of your sister Pat. It sounds as if she was a remarkable woman, who carried on the community spirit and advocacy displayed by your Mom. Our sincere condolences to your family and to hers. Cheryl and Jack. - Posted by: Cheryl Willis (Family friend) on: Jun 13, 2020
