DOREEN IRIS STEPHENSON

With sadness, we announce the passing of Doreen Iris Stephenson (nee Carr) on June 17, 2020. She left this world to join Fred, her husband of 68 years.
Doreen was born in Winnipeg, in 1928, to Gertrude and Clarence Carr. She spent her early years in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan; it was there that she began her lifelong friendship with Wanda Rutherford (nee Raeside). Her family relocated to Minnedosa when she was a child and lived there until moving to Winnipeg when Doreen was 15. It was in Winnipeg where Doreen met Fred, shortly after moving there. She was predeceased by her brother Don Carr; the Carr siblings shared a special bond.
Doreen's five children: Jeff (Julie); Tim (Pat); Scott (Jeannette); Perry (Traci) and April (Michelle) would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time. Specifically, the staff at West Park Manor.
Doreen has seven grandchildren (and spouses) and nine great-grandchildren. She had a way of making each of them feel special and had many of them convinced she was magic, like Mary Poppins, for much of their childhood.
Doreen had a long career in nursing, filling many roles from bed-side nurse to supervisor and finally, as nursing home administrator. She proudly assisted in the opening of Oakview Place and was an active member of her Grace grad alumnae (class of 1950). Her love and concern for people was present in everything she did. She was a long-standing member of Westworth United Church and sang in the choir for many decades.
In retirement, Doreen spent her time painting, reading, mall-walking and baking endless banana breads. Her summers were spent at her cottage on Malachi Lake (fondly nicknamed "Loch Side Croft"); baking pies with Malachi blueberries was an art form she perfected. She was rarely seen without her knitting needles, always in the process of making a blanket for someone. She was always ready for a visit and enjoyed celebrating the many milestones and accomplishments of her beloved family and friends. A wonderful life lived with love.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Westworth United Church or West Broadway Community Ministry in her honour.
Given the current circumstances, a private service will take place with Doreen's immediate family.

  • I’m sending my condolences to your entire family. My great-aunts and uncle lived next door to the Stephenson family on Carpathia. Doreen was the sweetest, kindest and most friendly neighbour a person could ask for. My great aunts just loved her. I was lucky enough to work at Oakview Place with Doreen too. She was the nicest supervisor and taught me so much. - Posted by: Catherine Newcombe (Great-niece of her neighbours) on: Jul 08, 2020

  • I enjoyed Doreen's company for many years driving her to Thursday choir practice, discussing topics of the day, family and other items that came to mind. I never had the radio on when we travelled. I also enjoyed singing with her in the choir for many years. Her presence, opinions and humour is missed. - Posted by: Bob Johnston (choir and friend) on: Jul 01, 2020

  • Doreen and Fred almost became part of our family as we became close friends when they lived on Carpathia and we lived on Lockwood. We all attended Westworth United and Fred and I had a Cub Pack at the church together. Doreen and Fred spent a week with us out in Parksville, BC and have many happy memories as we explored all the highways and byways of the area. Doreen was a warm and a "do anything for you" lady. She was always willing to help in whatever way she could for our family. My heart and prayers are with all her family and my memory of her will remain with me for always. • Doreen Stephenson was like a second mother to me. Her door was always open for a meal and a chat. Fred and Doreen provided a stable environment for us as young people to gather. In my adult years Doreen would always have a stash of delicious fudge for me every time I visited. Her memory will always be cherished. The character of her children bear a strong testimony to this amazing woman. Sincere condolences... Walle - Posted by: Walle Larsson (Family friend) on: Jun 24, 2020

  • My deepest sympathy to the entire Stephenson family on the loss of their beloved mother/grandmother/great-grandmother. How lucky I was when I joined Westworth United Choir to be seated beside Doreen. With her love of music she extended her talent by ringing in the Chapel Bells for many years. She and Fred were so friendly and introduced me to the joys of Lake Malachi where everyone engaged in so many happy memories. What fun we had at family gatherings here in the city and at the lake. May the many cherished memories of decades of love and laughter help sustain each of you in the future. Morna-June - Posted by: Morna-June Morrow (Close friend) on: Jun 24, 2020
