HELEN SPILLETT
(nee MURRAY)
April 27, 1928 - June 20, 2020
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Nancy Ashcroft (Adrian) and Lynn Jones; grandchildren, Bronwyn, Marshall (Roxanne) and Bryce (Caity); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mom was the last of her generation of both the Spillett and Murray families. She was predeceased by Donald (Shorty), her beloved husband of 51 years, her brother Charles, and her son-in-law Barry Jones.
Mom was an avid knitter and crocheter. Family and friends were often the recipients of her beautiful handiwork. Mom was a terrific baker and Christmas was always special with her homemade Vinatarta. Mom bowled at Park Alleys for many years, and was one of the founding members of the Golden Rule Seniors (even though she was not a senior at the time). She was Tawny Helen at the local Brownie pack and was very involved in the girls' school and other activities. Mom loved cats. There was always a family cat and the tradition has passed on to the next generations.
After Dad passed, Mom moved into South Osborne Place and very much enjoyed the friendships she made and the activities there for 18 years. From there Mom moved to Riverwood Square and then to Golden Door Geriatric Centre. Mom really enjoyed having the company of Thomas and Midnight, the resident cats there, as well as her ginger robotic cat Sandy. The family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful and caring staff at Golden Door, particularly during the past three months.
Cremation and a private family interment have taken place.
If friends or family so desire, donations may be made to Mom's favourite charity, the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or to a charity of your choice.

My condolences go out to the family at this time. I worked with Shorty at CN & enjoyed meeting his family during those years. Helen was an extraordinary person & I know she will be missed. - Posted by: Dennis Wray (Worked with Don) on: Jun 27, 2020

Auntie Helen was a very Special Auntie! One of my best memories I have still is joining my Mum, on a Friday, to have lunch with Auntie Helen, she made 'the best' egg salad sandwiches, then over to play 'penny bingo'!! Winning a pot or 2 and carrying home a bag with maybe 5 or 7 dollars worth of pennies was the cherry on the top for the afternoon! Auntie Helen loved to play card games, especially International Rummy! If we could coax in Lynn or Nancy to make up 4....the game was on!! She will be missed by all of her Family!! - Posted by: Arlene Widdows (Niece) on: Jun 27, 2020

Our sympathy to Lynn, Nancy and their families. Don's parents and Helen and Shorty were life long friends. Lots of great memories of family get-togethers. Take care everyone. Don and Janet - Posted by: Don and Janet Young (Family friends) on: Jun 27, 2020
