ED SHEARER
1929 - 2020
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife Reta, sons, Jim (Marlene), Don (Corie), and daughter Barb (Bernie). He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Emma Narvey and Brenden, Caelyn, William and Elizabeth Shearer (Cole). He also leaves behind his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Lorna and Gary Willems.
Ed grew up in Point Douglas and Elmwood, attending St. Johns Tech High School, Grace Street United Church and programs at the downtown YMCA. He showed leadership talents at an early age moving from camper to counsellor and eventually becoming a program director at the YMCA Camp Stephens where he learned the three pillars of mind, body and spirit which guided him throughout his whole life.
Ed was the son of William and Jean Shearer. He cherished his Scottish heritage and the life lessons and memories of working on the farm out in Eriksdale with his uncles. Ed built a successful career through hard work and perseverance in the packaging industry in sales and plant management in Winnipeg and held leadership positions in Packaging and Master Brewers Association of Canada
His years at YMCA Camp Stephens on Lake of the Woods inspired him to build a cottage in the Whiteshell where he could share his love of the outdoors with his family. Summers with family at White Lake brought him great happiness. Ed supported his children's interest in competitive water skiing and led him to become one of the founding members of the White Lake Ski Gulls waterski club.
Retirement years for Ed and Reta were happy ones filled with travel and many happy winters spent in Mesa, Arizona.
The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff at Harmony Court and Deer Lodge Centre for the wonderful care that he was given. Dad traversed his struggles of deepening dementia with great character and charm. He always participated in the activities in these settings to his fullest. He was treated with dignity, respect, and compassion; something we are all so thankful for.
Cremation has taken place. Due to the Covid restrictions a Celebration of Life and interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home with immediate family only.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's name to Camp Stephen's YMCA. http://www.ywinnipegcamps.com/campstephens/donate-today/
