MARUSIA ANNA ZUREK
(nee TARNAWECKY)

With deep sadness, at the end of a most beautiful Winnipeg summer day, the family of Marusia Zurek announces her passing on June 24, 2020, at the St. Boniface Hospital.
Marusia was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Irene Tarnawecky, and her grandparents, Very Rev. Serhij and Anna Gerus.
Marusia is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Kas Zurek; sons, Michael and Andrei Zurek, and her grandson Nikolai Zurek. Also left to mourn her passing is her sister and brother-in-law, Natalie and George Balko and their children and spouses; her uncle and aunt, Oleh and Bonnie Gerus, and many dear cousins and friends throughout Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Marusia was born in Winnipeg where she grew up, attended Grant Park High School and the University of Manitoba where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She went on to attend the Carlton University School of Journalism and then embarked on a career in corporate communications holding various positions in Alberta and Manitoba.
Family was very important to Marusia and what she loved most was spending time with family and close friends at the Gimli cottage. She looked forward to the summers when everyone would congregate at the cottage to reconnect and relax. Marusia also enjoyed travelling with Kas, family and friends, most recently taking a very memorable European river cruise. Marusia's passing has left a huge void in our lives and she will be missed very much by all of her family including her kitties, Zena and Ziggy.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at St. Boniface Hospital that have looked after Marusia with care and compassion for the past two months.
In accordance with Marusia's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.

  • Kaz and boys, I am deeply saddened to learn of Marusia's passing. I have such fond memories of her. It was lovely to be near Marusia's warm and gentle nature. I remember the times we spent together with Michael and Andrei having lunch at our house. It was great to get together with the children all so close in age (Lindsay and Andrei born the same day). My thoughts and prayers are with you and I hope that the good memories you have of Marusia will carry you through this sad time. • It is with deep sorrow that we learned of Marusia’s death. Our families were deeply intertwined from the time we all arrived in Canada and I have known Marusia since she was born. In 1971, she was one of my bridesmaids and I have always treasured that and our friendship. To Kaz and her beloved boys, and to Natalka and Yurko, I wish God's peace for you in this time of mourning.
