MARION JANET WIDLAKE

It is with much sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend on July 16, 2020.
Marion will be sadly missed by her sister Lorraine Schiedel of London, ON and her brother Edward/Ted (Carolynn Pietrangeli) of Grimsby, ON, nephew Paul (Melissa) Schiedel of Strathroy, ON and children, Tyler and Jillian, niece Susan (Dwayne) McIlmoyle and children, Sarah and Emily Beadle, niece Pamela Lima and children, Anthony, Julianna and Rachel, all of London, ON. She will be lovingly remembered by her uncle Jim Rennie (Joyce) of Winnipeg, along with several cousins in Winnipeg and family in Alberta.
Marion was born on November 19, 1941 in Saskatoon, the eldest child of Edward and Janet Widlake. Apart from two years spent in Transcona during the Second World War, her early years were happily spent in Saskatoon. After Normal School in Saskatoon she relocated to Winnipeg where she spent her teaching career with the Winnipeg One School Division. During this time she returned to the University of Saskatchewan to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree and later a Master degree in philosophy from the University of Manitoba.
Marion was a giver and that is what truly made her happy. She spoiled her nieces and nephew with affection and gifts. She did the same for her extended family, their children and nearly everyone she met...from friends to their children to long lost kinfolk overseas. She was generous to a fault, knew everyone's birthdays and anniversaries and never forgot to send a card. She supported local art, music and theatre, she embraced elderobics, she had a stitching group and she was a charter member of 'The Old Ladies of the Lake'.
Lorraine and Ted wish to thank our extended family and Marion's wonderful friends who have filled in all the gaps while we were too far away to help. We especially want to thank Leona and Doug Irwin for their unfailing attention, particularly during these last few months.
At this time there are no plans for a memorial service. A private family interment will be held at Glen Eden Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Grace Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I am so sorry to here of Ms. Widlake's passing. She was one of my favourite teachers, even though she called my mom to tell on me when I skipped my first class in the last two weeks before graduation! Such a lovely, caring teacher. I really looked forward to her special comments on my English papers. They were a highlight of my education. ❤ - Posted by: Irena Duncan (Student) on: Jul 08, 2021

  • Miss Widlake was my English teacher back in the 80's. She was very serious and very stern but had a great way of teaching and a soft side for her students that I could see from her. I wasn't the easiest student but gained a great appreciation for English class because she had a charm to her teaching and instilled discipline. I wish I would have had the opportunity to thank her for what she had taught me at a very young age. Rest in Peace Miss Widlake, I have never forgotten the lessons you have left with me. - Posted by: cheryl () on: Jul 25, 2020

  • Marion and I worked together at Sisler High School for many years. Students may have pretended otherwise, just to be cool, but they admired and respected her. Her grasp of the English language made her the go to person for vocabulary and grammer. I recall her explaining to me what serendipity was, and think of her every time I say it. Marion was a very interesting woman, and always seemed so confident. - Posted by: Moira Honey (Colleague) on: Jul 25, 2020

  • So sorry to hear of Marion's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I have known Marion since 1967 and will miss her, and, her humour. Cheryl - Posted by: Cheryl Richman (Friend) on: Jul 25, 2020
