FR. MICHAEL KARL KORYLUK
Father Michael was born and raised in Winnipeg. His parents came to Winnipeg from Montreal and settled on William Avenue. Faith was an important value in the Koryluk home. They were actively involved in the Sacré-Couere and Holy Rosary parish communities. They also cherished their French and Polish cultures. Michael Sr. died at a young age and in the ensuing years Father Michael took very good care of his mother Amy; he was indeed the apple of his mother's eye.
Father Michael was educated by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) and Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI). He continued his post-secondary education at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Education and upon graduation taught for the Assiniboine South School Division for seven years.
Attentive to the Holy Spirit in his life, Michael responded with a "yes" to God's invitation to the vocation of ministerial priesthood. In 1974 he began his formation at St. John XXIII, near Weston, MA, as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. On April 25, 1979, he was ordained to the ministerial priesthood by Cardinal George Flahiff, CSB at Holy Rosary Church.
Father Michael was a beloved pastor and cared deeply for the communities he served in and with: St. Peter's, St. Mark's, St. John Brebeuf, St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Paul's College (University of Manitoba). He embraced his gifts as an educator, and these served as guides for him in his ministry as a shepherd and teacher. He connected easily with people and his preaching wove the Gospel into daily life in relevant ways. He had a remarkable presence with young people and a special place in his heart for those who struggled or were in need.
His love for music and theatre drew him to participate in numerous community events: Christmas concerts, volunteer appreciation dinners, and coffee houses. He will always be fondly remembered for his Halloween decorations and costumes which sparked delight in children of all ages.
His knowledge and gift of music blessed everyone around him. Singing and playing the organ for weddings and funerals was part of his life before he entered the seminary. A highlight for Father Michael was codirecting the choir for the mass with the Holy Father, St. John Paul II, at Bird's Hill Park in 1984.
He shared his gifts and time on various committees and boards in the Archdiocese and the broader community including: the Council of Priests, the College of Consultors, the Liturgical Commission, the Archdiocesan Choir, Dean in both North and South Deaneries, Inter-Diocesan Diaconate Formation, Villa Rosa, MacDonald Youth Services, St. Paul's High School, and as a Spiritual Guide for Search for Christian Maturity. He also faithfully served the community of St. Mary's Academy.
Father Michael had many childhood friends that remained dear to him throughout his life. Some of these friends are part of the coffee club that meets regularly at Grant Park Shopping Centre.
It is said that blood is thicker than water and faith is thicker than blood. There are several people who became his family through faith and he loved them dearly. Through the gift of celebrating the Sacraments with them and accompanying them through joyful and difficult moments, Father Michael reflected the love of God. These bonds will be cherished forever. In addition to the many parishioners of the various parishes he served, he also leaves to mourn his loss his extended family in Ontario and Quebec.
Father Michael's hearty laugh, warm presence, mischievous curiosity, and deep faith has touched the lives of many. He lived his baptismal and ministerial call to the full. Well done good and faithful servant!
In the final weeks of his life, Father Michael was blessed with the extraordinary care and concern from the staff at Deer Lodge Centre, 4W, with special thanks to Dr. Jose. At Deer Lodge they treated him with dignity, respect, and love.
Public viewing will be held on Friday, August 14 between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., and in compliance with Covid-19 restrictions regrettably attendance is limited to invitation only. Live-streaming of the liturgy will be made available on the Holy Rosary website: www.holyrosarychurch.ca
Flowers are gratefully declined. If you choose to make a donation in Fr. Michael's memory, please consider doing so to Villa Rosa Inc. or Gonzaga Middle School.

Father Mike you were a very good friend to us and Grant Park Coffee buddy. My (late husband Karl) and I loved your laughter and friendship. It's hard to believe that it is 4 years ago today that I never heard that boisterous laugh again. Thinking of you a lot these days. Merry Christmas - I'm sure this one is extra special. You meant so much to me and my family. Thank you for baptizing many of us. I remember when you came to our house when I was young and were the only other person who liked lemon meringue pie, when you called signing a form McDonald's advocacy when I was a young man, and when I would run into you at Grant Park all the time at the right time these past summers. It's a highlight that my last memory of you is putting your hand on my shoulder last Christmas Eve at SJB somehow, and no words were exchanged, just a glance. You influenced me immensely and are missed even greater than that. Until we meet again. - Posted by: Michael Silicz (Friend) on: Dec 22, 2020

I first met Father Mike when he would walk by my kiosk at Grant Park with his buddies Karl and Dennis. The 3 of them would stop and say hi and chit chat, it was always a happy mood with Father Mike. I had gotten to know him and the coffee group for the past 4 years. I will miss having him around the mall and just hearing the hello's from the coffee group at Grant Park. Rest in Peace - Posted by: James K. (Grant Park Mall Friend) on: Sep 27, 2020

Mr. Koryluk was my French teacher way back around 1967 when I was in elementary school. He would bring in French pasteries as rewards for our "French abilities". Needless to say he was my favourite teacher! It was nice to read that he continued to make differences in peoples lives. Thanks Mr.Koryluk. May Heaven accept another Angel. It was a privilege to have been able to serve at mass with you presiding. Your homilies were always funny but touching. Your humble demeanor was so inspiring. I learned a lot in your lessons on homiletics during my formation days. May God be glorified for your love and service! - Posted by: Deacon Michael Cordova (Parish of St. Mary's Cathedral) on: Aug 15, 2020

My husband and I and our three sons were very fortunate to have had Father Koryluk as parish priest when we attended St. Peter's Church. We too remember him coming down the aisle on Christmas Eve, dressed as Santa, holding a gift for the baby Jesus, not a sound from the many children attending the mass. They were enthralled, as we were. We were so sorry to hear he had passed away. He touched the lives of many. May he rest in peace, now in the presence of his beloved mother. - Posted by: Sharon McGavock (Former parishioner of St. Peter's Church) on: Aug 15, 2020

“ Mom! Fr. Mike passed away “was the text I received at 1030 Saturday from my 30 Year old son, one of our 5 children who had wonderful Fr. Mike as our parish priest and school priest at St. John Brebeuf church. The news then travelled to all our kids who all, were shocked and sad together through the family chat. The memories flooded our family texts- One wonderful one was the beautiful Way Fr. Mike walked down the aisle of One Christmas concert dressed as Santa, one could hear a pin drop because like every catholic school Christmas concerts were about the birth of baby Jesus. But the intertwining of both that year was magical and Fr. Mike was beautiful in that role. He loved the school. He loved the school staff. He loved the parish staff. He loved and appreciated the music ministry. I was Singing in one of the groups at the time ( and still am) and we would revel in his beautiful Voice, his wink from the alter and his ability to Guide us every week with his homily words. He was a wonderful man and personally our family loved him as our priest and our friend. Rest In Peace Fr. Loris and I were saddened to hear about the passing of Fr Michael. We remember him fondly. Especially at Holy Rosary where he talked to Donna about music and how he played the organ at one time. Loris served at mass with Father Michael. - Posted by: Donna Vendramelli (Friend) on: Aug 13, 2020

Rest in peace Fr. Michael. He married my parents and 25 years later married my husband and I. He was there for my first communion as a child, confirmation, the baptism of one of my six children, and the blessing of our home. In 2010, he presided at my father's funeral. He will be remembered alongside some of the most important events in our family's life. He helped restore my faith when I was lost. He was definitely a gift from God to us and to countless others. - Posted by: Gail Bacosa-Puhawan (Parishoner) on: Aug 13, 2020

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his and all souls Rest in Peace. Father Mike was an inspiration to me as an adult when I first attended St. Mary's on a regular basis around 2005. The music was always great and his homilies very inspirational. He also gave me a strong recommendation to teach in the Archdiocesan Schools, which was very helpful. Well done, good and faithful servant. - Posted by: DAVID IMRIE (Parishioner, St. Mary's Cathedral) on: Aug 13, 2020

Father Mike was my family's priest at St. Mary's Cathedral as well as my son's priest when he was at St. Paul's College at the University of Manitoba. We all have fond memories of him and will miss him dearly. He truly was a good man with a kind heart. We will miss his boisterous laugh and big bear hugs. He deeply cared about his parishioners and played a big part in their lives. We sincerely hope he has found peace and is with his parents now. - Posted by: G. With sincere sympathy to Mike's friends and family on the news of his recent passing. Mike and I attended the seminary in Massachusetts 1975-79. He was well-liked by all for his kindness, musical talent, deep faith--and dry sense of humor. I also recall his devotion to his mother, a lovely lady to meet: she came to visit the seminary while he was enrolled. Although we were not in contact later, I'll always remember Mike warmly. I know he was much-valued by those who knew him, and who will miss him now. God bless. - Posted by: Joe OHare (Classmate) on: Aug 13, 2020

I’m so glad I met you and am grateful for all the good times and laughter that we shared. Most memorable is the time we were sharing a cigarette and nearly burned down the rectory. But above all, I treasured your friendship. Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Donna Alexander (Friend and co-worker (St. Jean Brebeuf)) on: Aug 13, 2020

I remember Father Michael when we were education students together at the U of M in 1967. He was a jolly soul then with the voice of an angel, I recall during "voice" classes where we all were graded - nobody got more than a "C+". Michael got "C++" We couldn't believe that score. Father MIchael was a rare kind of human being - somebody beyond special and I am sure that all those who crossed passed with him were truly impressed and blessed. A new member of the choir of angels Bless you, Father Michael. - Posted by: jim farmer (student a faculty of Education the same year) on: Aug 12, 2020

Father (Mr.) Koryluk was my Grade 7 Language Arts teacher at Dieppe School. He was passionate, engaged, and always ready with a laugh or a teasing comment, something that endeared him to his adolescent students. His love for literature came through in our study of Jean Val Jean, a book that fueled my already voracious reading habit and inspired me to one day become an English teacher. I met him at an event in the early 80's, only to discover he had become a priest. I can only imagine what a gift Father Koryluk must have been to the young people in the Winnipeg parishes he served. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Tannis (Baxter) Niziol (former student) on: Aug 12, 2020

I will always remember Father Micheal fondly. He holds a very dear place in my heart. The many years at St.Peter's Catholic Church will stay with me forever. As a Lector and Choir member, a member of the Youth Group, and my marriage, I enjoyed my years of faith under his guidance. But none more so, than the illness and subsequent death of my Mother. He was there continuously whenever she needed him, during the year before her passing, and gave her Absolution on the morning of her death. He attended the family during that time, offered me comfort. I will always remember him with so much love and was eternally grateful for his presence and comfort at that time. He presided over the memorial of my Mother and gave a beautiful speech during the service. That was the type of man he was, full of character, love, and such devotion to his flock. If you needed him he was always available. Rest in Peace in the arms of the Lord, Father Micheal. And thank you, for being a such a wonderful Shepherd for me, I will always think of you with such love! - Posted by: Marnie Jaslowski (Parishioner) on: Aug 12, 2020

I am absolutely gutted. Everything seems so slow and empty now with you gone. You where the most important person and most influential person I have met and will meet on my journey. I am sad that I will not ever hear your laugh or get a big hug and smile again. I am sad that you never got to meet or hold my baby girl. I’m sad for missed moments. I’m sad we never got one last drink or one last prank to pull on each other. I am happy that your final journey has brought you home to your ever so lovely mother (who I think of a lot ) and your father. I’m happy that we got 25+ years together. I’m happy that my son understands who you where and what you meant to me and my family. I am happy that I had you as role model and father, when my biological dad couldn’t. I thank you for giving me the tools to be the parent to my kids that you where to me. You were caring, and tough on me when you needed to be. You pulled every emotion out of me when you knew I needed it. You where my guiding light in life and that light just got a bit darker. I love you and miss you. Too many you where Fr. Mike, but to me you where always and will always be my Father, Mike. Safe journeys and give your mom a hug. - Posted by: Chad (Family.) on: Aug 12, 2020
